Yesterday, the day was absolutely beautiful & I was feeling particularly well. So for the first time in 3-years, I dusted off my archery compound bow & took a few practice shots. You see, my husband signed us up for this year's senior olympics & I'm starting to get excited about it. :)

In order to qualify for Nationals, you must first qualify for State. That tournament takes place next month. Then, if you place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in State, you're on to Nationals. This year, nationals will be held in Houston, TX & that really excites both of us!

Usually qualifing locally is not a very big deal because you are placed in your respective age groups, mine being 55-59 & there aren't that many women I would have to compete with. You shoot 30 shots at 60 yds., then 50 yds. & lastly, 40 yds., for a possible score of 900 pts. My goal is to shoot in the upper 700's or 800's to have a running chance.

The only thing that concerns me is the heat and how & if, I will be able to tolerate it & finish my competition. Usually State takes place the latter part of July, first part of August, the hottest time of the year for us. So keep your fingers crossed for me!

If you'd like to see last year's for the senior olympics, here are the links: http://www.nmseniorolympics.org & http://www.2009seniorgames.org.

The catagory we participate in is Archery Compound Release.

Fantastic! For several years I had to spend a lot of time in extremely hot model homes in the middle of the summer. I had these scarves that I soaked in water and put in the freezer. I would wear them at work and even sometimes when golfing. They really helped.

Norma Jean, you GO GIRL!!!!

I used to Deer Hunt with a Compound many years ago. I actually started with a Conventional Bow but at 50 pound Draw Weight it was too much.

What draw weight do you shoot (or HAVE to shoot)? What is your Let Off per cent? Do you compete as a team or as individuals?

90 shots-----WOW!!!!! Make sure you stay hydrated with plenty of water.

GOOD LUCK to both of you. Keep us posted and as ROSS is fond of saying-----PICTURES---WE NEED PICTURES!!!!!

May God Bless,

Danny :)

Norma,

I KNOW you can do this with your motivation, and determination! This is sooooo exciting! I'm so happy for you.
I'll be thinking of you. Please keep us updated.

Thank you for all the well wishes....we will surely need them.

After reading over our Senior Olympics packet, Nationals is actually NOT until 2011. This year, however, is the qualifier so if we place in State this year, we go to Nationals next year in Houston.

I was telling my husband that I don't know "why" all of a sudden, it became so important to qualify and try for Nationals .......perhaps it's my last hoorah.....don't know but I plan to give it my all!

And of course if we make it, you'll be the first to know & there will be pictures! :))

You compete as an individual Danny & you are grouped with others in your own age group. I would be competing in the 55-59 age group, my husband in the 60-65.

I shoot a Hoyt with 65% let-off, set at 38 lbs at the present time. If I do add any more weight, it won't be more than 40 lbs. It is repetitive shooting & you are shooting 90 arrows so the less weight you shoot the better off you'll be. And in Nationals, it is a two-day shoot & you shoot 90 arrows each day for a maximum score of 1800.

My husband is going to order a replica of the targets that are used to give us better practice. Hope it helps.

This is awesome! Good for YOU!
There shall be no "if's" about it, you rock and you will do it in fine fashion.
