I am 57 ,and having to make the decision on which type of aortic valve to have put in. I am very active with outdoor activities, and I am worried about how the coumadin therapy with a mechanical valve will affect my lifestyle. any feedback will help. thanks:)

Activity while on Coumadin

Sparrow, I can say from personal experience you can hike, run,
golf, tennis and do most anything where you don't get hit or collide with things. Many fine athletes run the marathon or do the triathalon while on coumadin after heart surgery.

Activity while on coumdadin

I golf 3-4 times a week, run 1-2 miles 3x a week and when I get to Nashville I will show Hank a great corner jump shot in a one on one basketball game.

I'll be 54 October 11.

Hi Sparrow,

MATRXR is "right on" about your activities. I remember this question coming up before, and I wrote to St Judes Medical for an answer. They clarified the issue stating that there are many professional atheletes and Olympians that are on Counadin. Coumadin will not restrict your activity level, however, other medications or medical conditions may. Your doctor should be the one to inform you based on your personal health condition.

The one thing that you want to be careful about though is high impact sports. You do not want to have any severe hits, bangs or falls when taking Coumadin.

Hope this helps,

Rob

Active Lifestyles

Keeping that active lifestyle going, Sparrow. I'm hoping the guys will take it easy on me as I'm joining a 40+ B-ball league this fall at my club. I may have to wear my kids' old Tae Kwon Do sparring outfits to combat getting bruised, but I guess they can't be any worse than the bruises I get now. If I bang my knee on the desk drawer or smack myself while putzing around in the garage or yard, it's "yep, that'll be a nice bruise!"

I really think my valve replacement has changed my lifestyle for the better. I'm eating better (as I have to concentrate on WHAT I eat!), exercising and taking vitamins and nutrients. I could do without the drugs and maybe someday will experience the new (X-something name) drug that is being studied that may replace Coumadin (Gina mentions the symposium in one of her replies and the MSNBC website also did a story on it). It doesn't require blood tests!

Cheers!

Perry
