We are having a few days of extremely cold weather for our part of New Mexico. This evening is going to go below zero degrees Fahrenheit. What is there to do when it is so cold? We live a few miles from the historic village of Jemez Springs. It wouldn't surprise you to hear that there are many natural springs in our area. It might surprise you to hear that we have hot springs, and that even in the winter the hottest of those springs will check in between 150 to 180 degrees. In Jemez Springs there is a small bathhouse run by the village.

Long ago, somebody created concrete tubs about two feet deep and six feet long. Each tub has a two inch in diameter pipe. The cold one is icy cold, and the source of this water comes from somewhere out on the mountain. The hot one is heated from deep below the earth's surface and is at least 150 degrees. There is a small "co-ed" section with adjacent tubs. Barb and I each spent about an hour soaking the cold away. We stayed warm as I put our pick-up in 4 wheel drive and drove back up the canyon. We are still nice and warm, with Barb reading in front of the fire, and I have dug out the old down quilt that we regularly used in Minnesota. I would want it warmer if it was my choice, but the cold outside has helped to give us a warm and memorable evening.*

Now this is more like it!

It was below zero three days ago. Today it is nearly70 degrees. We ate lunch out on the deck, and opened the doors to let in the fresh air. With the power of the New Mexico sun, that 70 degrees is T shirt weather. We are hoping that the worst part of winter is over.
