I just posted a version of this on my Facebook page. Last night I was shocked to a receive a request from a friend's wife to be her friend on "desktop dating". This was not at all consistent with my impression of her, and I didn't click yes or no, being more than a little suspicious. This morning I received a very embarrassed group email stating that she had received a similar request, clicked no, but even so the invitation went out to everyone in her address book. I don't expect to share her problem, as I never clicked on any part of the "invitation". However, if such a message is going to be sent to all of my email contacts, I would like to be aware of that as soon as possible. Please let me know ASAP if you receive an "invitation" from "me".

Perhaps my Mac. OS will help as well.

That is kind of funny, but I can see where it would make you uncomfortable and her embarrassed. I wonder if it knows to differentiate between men and women, or if it just goes to everyone - even relatives. My dad is one of my friends and it would be kind of disgusting if I got this from him! It could also cause problems if the spouse finds out about it and doesn't believe the explanation. Hopefully enough people will complain and they will correct the problem.

I should clarify one thing.

I should clarify one thing.

In re-rereading my post, I can see I might have created the impression that this problem was somehow associated with the Facebook site. What I should have made more clear is that I had posted the same warning here as I did earlier on Facebook. The problem had nothing to do with the Facebook site. I just wanted to post in both places to do the most complete job of getting the warning out.

Lisa--Thanks for your response. I was concerned about some of the very things you mentioned, and made sure that Barb knew about the"invitation" immediately after I received it.

A couple of years back my husband gave me a good computer tip.....When random notifications or pop ups appeared on my screen that offered the standard answers of YES or NO, he said to click on the "X" in the corner instead. That way there is no chance of misinterpreted responses or activations.

Exactly. By clicking yes or no, you could even infect yourself with a trojan or virus!

Dennis,

I am so disappointed. I was so excited when you sent me a date invitation. Now I find out it was by mistake. I guess I can cancel my plane reservation.;):D

Just kidding - couldn't resist but haven't received anything to date.

Gina definitely had the best answer! Thanks for the clarification Dennis. I'm new on Facebook and thought maybe Desktop Dating was something I hadn't found yet (and won't be using).
