I talked to my daughter's mother in law last nite and got a request for help. Her husband Al had a mechanical valve installed in the aortic position about four years ago. While in surgery, they discovered a tumor. They went back in a week later and removed it, and then Al underwent radiation therapy but not chemo. About four months ago, they discovered that cancer had returned and started chemotherapy. Al developed interstitial pneumonitis about three weeks ago and was hospitalized. For the last two weeks he has been in intensive care on a ventilator because the act of breathing was taking every ounce of energy he had. When I talked to his wife Judy last night she requested prayers for recovery and also any information about support groups/forums for people using assisted breathing, and those who had undergone a tracheotomy. So far my searches have been unproductive - your help and prayers would be very much appreciated. I'm going to Texas next week to give support and hope everything works out. Thanks - Chris

You have them on my end Chris. I can sympathize with that situation very easily. I don't know of any sites that deal with that sort of stuff, but I'll take a trach any day over that damn intubation tube in the mouth! If you've got questions about trachs, ask away. I've been trached twice now.

Chris,
We'll look on the AARC website to see what we can find. It's private for members, but has links that might yield something. If I come up with anything, I'll PM you.

mornin Chris - nice to see you.

I wonder if a pulmonary site might have something in a sub-topic. I will look and if I find something, will put it here.

Chris---You do not state the location of the cancer. If you go to: "listserv.acor.org" you will find over 130 support groups for various types of cancer. I belong to the Head & Neck group. Many of our members had a tracheotomy. You could join that group and ask your questions. Or, you may find a more pertenant group to join. Fortunately, I didn't have to have one, so I can't help you. Praying for your daugther's father-in-law. Sierra Bob

An update on Al

An update on Al

I heard from Al's family today - It seems his lungs may be starting to heal up but they found bacteria in his blood and he has developed an arrhythmia so the picture remains very complex. I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers - I will convey this to Judy when I see her this Friday. As usual, you guys are the greatest. Chris

Greetings, Chris. (Long time no hear, buddy) I'll keep Al and his family in my thoughts and prayers this holiday season. Hope the doctors can help him through this battle.

Hi Guys - I'm writing this in Texas - Despite all your help, Al didn't make it and passed away Nov 30. The family is doing ok and I will remain here until burial on Sunday. Al was a professor at Univ of Texas, a brillant guy with many patents and publications to his credits. He was also a great family man and a good friend of mine. Thanks again. Chris

Man I'm sorry to hear that Chris. The family has my condolences and prayers. I guess it just wasn't in the cards for recovery. :(

Oh, Chris, I am so sorry to hear this. From what you say, he gave a lot during his lifetime and his family and friends can be very proud of all the lives he has touched and his legacy to us all. My sincerest condolences.
