Well, it has been 8 days since the surgery and I am recovering at home. Things are a bit different than they were in the hospital. My sleeping schedule is a bit off. It’s very hard to sleep at night or during the very early morning hours. I’ve spent a lot of time watching the deer in the morning while everyone else is still sleeping. My first night home I was able to take a shower. Now that felt good. It was my first time going up stairs so I was a bit scared. Matt helped me up as it was very “confusing” and exhausting to walk up the stairs. I attempted to sleep in my own bed that night but after about 30 minutes of trying to get comfy, I just couldn't do it. So down the stairs we went so that I could sleep in the recliner that Matt had bought me for my birthday. I still need help getting up and down the stairs and in and out of the shower. It is one of those “lift chairs”. It’s been my very good friend since I have been home. The last few nights I have finally slept in my bed.

I have been taking walks around the house. I was glad the rain stopped after the weekend so that Matt could take me outside to walk. I walked up and down the drive way several times. I am learning to listen to my body as to when enough is enough. I continue to do my breathing exercises with my spirometer (Olivia calls it my lung machine). It is difficult but I know that I need to use it. I will start cardiac rehab in a couple weeks. I will be doing this at St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital. This will help tremendously with my recovery.

Tomorrow I have a follow up appointment with my Cardiologist as well as an appointment with the new Renal Doctor. I will also have a chest xray and lab work done. The chest xray should tell if all of the fluid is off of my left lung. There was still some when I was released from the hospital and the last 2 days I have had a lot of pain my back. They talked about draining it when I was in the hospital but it seemed to be getter better.

I am waiting for my taste buds to return. Nothing tastes like food or the way it should. I guess I’ll lose some weight out of all of this. Not even water. It’s very strange. I finally was able to have some grapefruit juice for the first time in over 2 years. One of my heart meds I was on prevented me from drinking it. Since the surgery I haven’t had to take on my heart meds I was on. I started Tikosyn in 2007 and now after the surgery, I do not need to take it anymore. That is great news. The drug has so many side effects and there are pages of other meds you can’t take with it. So I was relieved when the doctors told me I didn’t need it anymore.

Again, thank you for all your prayers and well wishes. Matt goes back to work on Monday which I’m a bit nervous about that. I may have my mom come up a few days. As I continue my recovery at home I will keep your thoughts and prayers with me. I’m sure in time I will be better than I felt 5 years ago. Thank you for all your support.

Laura thanks for the detailed post. Sounds like you should have your mom over...to help with the kids perhaps......you sound like you are doing great.....keep using the "lung machine".....I am still waiting for surgery, but have heard the lecture about importance of it from every healthcare provider I meet with. Blessings!

Laura, sounds like you're doing fine. Keep it up! Don't worry about your sleep schedule -- mine's still not quite right after 4 wks. Just make sure you get lots of rest between those walks and spirometer exercises. What did you mean by "confusing" to walk up the stairs?

I'm glad to hear everything is going so well with you. Keep up the good work. Please do not get ahead of yourself thinking you can do all the little things now. All those little things will add up to make you to sore the next day. We do not want you going backwards.

It seems like a very good idea to call your mother down for a couple of days, or anyone else you can for that matter. Just remember time will come when it will be all up to you again, so get your rest now.

Take care now & don't lift anything over ten pounds yet. ;)

Thanks for the update Laura. I second your idea of having your mom over to help. You seem to be on a good road to recovery. Just take it slow and like you said, let your body tell you when enough is enough. I'm still thinking of you. :)

Laura, you sound great.

I think you should ask Mom to come help--not only would she probably love being able to do it (my step-mother almost begged to come, but with the girl child in full administrative swing, I really didn't need anybody else, and my husband got to go back to work without worrying about me), but she'll be good for the kiddos to have around. Once you start sleeping a bit more normally, you'll probably improve all the more quickly. And that's where Mom can really come in handy--running interference and allowing you to rest.

Good luck, and keep up the good work.

What I mean is my brain is telling me to move one foot but my body is telling me to use the other foot. I can't walk up the stairs like before. You know, one foot then the other? It's like my body can only put one foot up and then bring the other foot up to the same stair. I tried really focusing on how I should walk and realized it was painful so I wonder if body is doing this to compensate for the pain. Not sure. I will ask the Cardio tomorrow.

Laura -

Your post is a Classic TextBook example of a Normal Post-Op progression at 1-2 weeks. You should expect a first 'breakthrough' after 2 weeks when you will be able to do a 'little' more for yourself (but still Tire Quickly), then a slow but steady progression through week 6. Many return to non-physical jobs at 6 to 8 weeks. You may find yourself continuing to recover / recondition yourself for several months (sometimes a year or so for those of us who are uh... more 'elderly' as one Doc put it)

MANY report sleeping in their recliners for several weeks.
MANY report sleeping in 2 to 3 hour 'spurts'.
NAPS are GREAT!

My Surgeon's Resident told me to use my Incentive Spirometer for 10 minutes every 2 hours. I would 'PUSH' until I could literally 'feel' the fluid being squeezed out of my chest cavity (between lung and chest wall).

Sounds right to me. I especially sympathize with the sleeping issue. I would have loved a recliner the first 2 weeks home. I do think it is great you are in your own bed now. I have read some posts where people are in the recliners for months. I think that is pushing it a bit myself.

I only lost my taste for about a week. Kinda wish mine lasted longer so I could have lost some weight. I have a new found fondness for ice cream which is no good!

Sounds like you're doing great, don't push yourself, you'll be back to normal quicker than you think!

I think having your mom come is a great idea. I had forgot, that is exactly how I walked the stairs too! I guess that is normal? I hope the fluid is GONE! I did not sleep in my own bed for a month. I was on the couch. I had weird sleeping habits and watched a lot of TV at night. Best of luck to you.

Laura,
I couldn't sleep in my own bed for probably 10 days post op. I slept, fitfully, in a recliner in the living room. I saw more late night tv that ten days than I've seen in the last ten years.;)
Having your mom come and stay sounds like a terrific idea.:) Hang in there, and I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

It was months before I could get any decent sleep in my bed. Your taste buds will come back to normal.

Karl

This reminds me ... I think that how I went upstairs too!! easier on the heart!

Do not rush to have your taste buds back...mine came back quickly and all the weight I lost came back with it with some bonus lbs :D. I am joking. It will come back soon and you will enjoy good food again. I only liked to have chicken soups at that time.
