August 6, 2011, Marked 7 months since my OHS.
I bought a Trek 1.5 bicycle on May 5, on advice of my cardio rehab staff
(He has a Trek 2.3).
I reached 1402 miles on Aug. 6, 2011 (3 months of riding with my new trek).
My avg speed is slowing going up, and HR is coming down. Last Sat. July 30. I went on a 50 mile bike ride with a bike club, and my average speed for the 50 miles was 17 mph.
My HR avg runs about 150 bpm with a max of 184 bpm on some hills. I was riding in a pace line, and on the hill it started going up so I backed off. HR came down fast to 150 again. I talked to my cardio and they were ok with that, because rhythm is very good. I wore a holter monitor for 48 hrs. to make sure.
Today I hit my fastest speed of 36 mph and HR was not an issue. 1 month ago my avg speed was about 13-14mph and HR was almost always in high 170’s.
August 14, I am going to ride the Covered Bridge Bicycle Tour ride, 100+ miles. They are expecting about 700 riders.
Before my OHS I did not exercise, I would be out of breath in less than a min.
I climbed up to Rooster Rock last week. The climb is 2.2 miles and goes up 2400 feet. Starts at 1300 feet and goes up to 3700 feet. I hiked it with my daughter last summer, but couldn’t keep up with her; I was out of breadth the whole time. (bad aortic valve, but didn’t know it). Last week she couldn’t keep up with me, and I had to keep waiting for her. (She is 18 and very competitive). I enjoyed that.
Scar is now only a thin white pencil line.
I am on 50mg metoprololl a day. When I exercise I can push HR up to 170, but that is getting harder. 170 bpm was Ok’d by my cardio.
I monitor HR with a Garmin forerunner 610, (tracks and records route, HR, speed, cadence, it is close to 40 different metrics to choose from. and also a bontrager bike computer HR, speed, cadence, etc...
I believe I am in much better condition than before OHS. I still go to gym 3 days a week.
