Hi Everyone!
I had my six month post op appt with my cardio yesterday. Everything seemed to go just fine. He told me everything sounds just like it should and he hears nothing that would indicate a problem. He doesn't want to see me for a year. I asked him about exercising because ever since the surgery, I have had a hard time getting back into shape (my confidence). I keep thinking something may still be wrong in there and something may happen if I start working out again. My cardio told me that since they don't know exactly what caused my dissection, that I should be careful and not do too much. That includes heavy weight lifting, running in races etc...where you really push your body. He told me that I could do normal cardiovascular exercise. I just need to be careful and not over do. Listen to my body. This is all just a precaution because they don't know if there is a connective tissue disorder or if it was just one of those flukey things that happened. He seems to think it is just one of those flukey things that happens. He also told me that extreme weight lifting etc...isn't good for anyones heart, whether you have had a problem or not. He kept telling me that there was nothing there to indicate to him that there would ever be a problem, but he is just being extremely cautious. He said that in about ten years or so they will probably have some tests that can be done to determine whether there is a connective tissue disorder. Well, I have to go pick up my little girl at preschool. Talk to you all later.

Take Care!

Gail,
Great news on your check-up and I'm really happy for you. My whole "heart experience" is because of "flukey things" ( I now have a new catch-phrase! ) and I keep on movin' down the road. But, the card is right...listen to him because as I've learned, you just don't know. Not worth the risk...each of us is way too important to someone else! Take care, and good to hear from you.

Hi Gail!
Great to hear from you and everything went well at the cardio yesterday. Sounds like everything is going real well and that is great.
Just passed my 2 months on Friday and am walking 1-2 miles a day with some light weightlifting the doc says is ok.
Keep getting stronger, it is great being on this side of the mountain, isn't it.

Hey Gail - Great report. Keep up the good work. Start out slow with those workouts and gradually do more and more. Do you have a pulse monitor ?- this is a pretty good way to make sure you don't overdo it too soon. Chris

Work Out?

Well since I can't do that, maybe you could work out for me too?

Hi Everyone!
I really need to start those work outs. I have put on about ten pounds since my surgery. I'm not eating any differently, I'm just not exercising the way I used to before the surgery. My doc also told me light weight lifting was ok. He just said that that heavy lifting where you are struggling to do only a few, is what is not good for you. I feel kind of silly that I didn't start exercising more sooner, but my confidence was shot. I just felt like something was going to happen if I started getting my heart rate up there. I had no problem when it came to running around and lifting at work, or running around at home, after the kids, but when I thought about a cardiovascular workout, I just got scared. I wish I would have been able to go to cardiac rehab, but my insurance wouldn't pay for it.... I guess I'll see how things go and if I continue to be a little hesitant about it, maybe I can talk to my cardio about writing something to the insurance company. It can't hurt to try. Regarding the pulse monitor, no, I don't have one, but it sounds like a really good thing to have. I'll check into it. Thanks!

I want to wish everyone here all the best. We all have been or will be going through some really tough times, but things do get better. It doesn't always feel that way, but it does get better.

Take Care!
Gail

Hi Gail
Thanks so much for the recommendation to this site. I'm glad that your 6 mnth visit went so well. Has for the weight gain, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm expecting to gain a lot more than 10 lbs. because I was a smoker before my incident. I am 6 weeks smoke free but still struggling with it. I try to sit and remember what I just went through and that turns me off from the cigarettes. You answered my question on coughing in the web-md site. The doctor seems to think that some of the coughing is coming from withdraw of not smoking. I am you age and very surprised how many people are our age with heart conditions. It seems to be more and more. Anyway good luck at the dentist and let us know how things go for you. Take care. A new heart friend.

Hi Gail

Hi Gail

Glad to hear your check up went great and that progress continues. Keep up those workouts and in no time those pounds will go away ! Faye - One of the cessation tips I learned at the many web sites I visited, was to convince yourself to think of the smoking urges as GOOD, because it is a sign that your body is recovering from the abuse given it by the cigarettes. It also helped me to anticipate every time I would have an urge. A third tip is to carry a nice water bottle with you (you probably need to hydrate more anyway) and use a nice big drink of water as a substitue. Hope that helps. Chris

Hey Gail !

Hey Gail !

so glad to hear that you are doing okay ....I often look out for your posts as we went through the mill at nearly the same time ..
I've put on weight too ...Hubby says he doesn't notice ..but I do ...when school goes back after the Easter Holidays I'm going to tackle it properly ..which I'll hate as I love cooking and eating ...I keep saying if I was taller I'd be slimmer !
Anyway I've not put on much ...but I can feel it in my clothes which I hate ....I think I'm enjoying my dinner more ..as before my op I was always so tired that I couldn't be bothered eating and didn't really enjoy dinner or cooking.
Anyway we've had the sun shining in Scotland this last few days which is a lovely surprise so I'm feeling upbeat and I've had a two week holiday which has been great .
Take care as I said before wonderful news that you are doing so well .
Scottie

Hi Gail-

I'm so glad to hear that you're feeling well enough to try a little rehab stuff. It's a big step when you've had some difficult things happen.

You sound well and ready to go.
