Well, I really did take some time off from running. Wanted to give my joints a rest. So after averaging 80-100 miles per month for about a year, I put in about 20 miles since White Rock in December.

I'm trying to run for fun without specific time goals. So far, I find that I'm not near as motivated, and have a knack for hitting the snooze button instead of bouncing out of bed and into my running clothes. I have been to the gym more often to do some strenght training. I've also gained 5 lbs.

Still, I enjoy it when I get out and run. My right foot still bothers me. I was hoping that the time off would help it heal. Guess I'll have it checked out. Everything else is fine.

The Cowtown races (Fort Worth) were this morning. Rather than stay away entirely, I entered the 5k. The waether was perfect 50F, cloudy and very slight breeze. I was pleased with the 28:16 result even though it was slower than my best by a couple of minutes. For the first time in a long time, I had negative splits. That means that each mile was quicker than the previous mile. This is very helpful for the psyche during the race, and confirms the pacing strategy is working. I had a wonderful time and met a lot of great people. About 12,000 participants of all ages.

I managed to watch the beginning and end of the marathon. I was not pining to be with the marathoners and just enjoyed the spectacle. The marathon, half marathon, and 10k all had the same finish line, So I hung out there for a while. I saw some people with huge hearts and courage pushing themselves to finish. Some had great times. Some had great perserverance. All are winners.

Mark Wagner - a 5k'er had his Border Collie with him today. He used a leash and struggled a bit with the crowded field. They ran past me at a good clip. Anyway, it reminded me of you.

Too bad about that foot - hope it's nothing lasting. Stress fracture maybe? Good idea to have it looked at.

Hope you're back to full speed soon!

Hi Tom, Congratualtions in your goal to "run to fun".. most people talk about that goal - but never achieve it. Good For You. If you accomplish nothing in life I think if you learn that having FUN in exercising then what you learn in life is that FUN is what life is all about.. :D

Remember, having FUN is what its all about..

I just finished a half marathon in 3:09:30 - which is my 'slowest' race time for a half marathon but it was definently my most enjoyable run.. :D

Remember FUN is what its all about..

Best Wishes :D

Marilyn,

Congratulations on the half marathon. That's terrific.

Yes, "Run for Fun" is the goal, but I am not there yet. I'm still learning not to push too hard.

Appointment Friday for my foot. Starting with my PCP. I expect to be refered to podiatrist or ortho doc.

Thanks Tom, for your words of achievement. I hope they are able to fix your foot. I have found that when I overcompensate for one injury - I always create another injury. :-( Injuries are the worse part of running. I slowed my pace on the half marathon - I purposely went out to walk and prevent any injuries for the rest of the year. It was hard though mentally. I wanted to 'book' it - but I also want to do 50 races this year as I will turn 50 in September and I think my goal this year should be to just 'finish' 50 races. I know having goals - keeps us motivated - but sometimes - its just "being in the race" that really is the most awesome accomplishment. You are an awesome person and your love for running is catchy.. I love reading your posts and your enthusiasm comes through so well. I know we can be very hard on ourselves sometimes ... We want and we push ourselves to be the very best we can be - but we also have to go for the distance and don't forget we are in this for the long term. Injuries are inevitable - people can go years with none - and then bang they start to hit them.. Perhaps the wrong sneakers or training to long and to hard. Its a matter of adjustments and learning how much and how long we can work at it. But accomplishing any goal is such an awesome feeling - as I'm sure YOU know. But don't push yourself to hard. I did and I injured myself permanently. Take your time and work it in slowly... Containly one's excitement is harder to overcome than the physical exertion. Making short term and long term goals is the key and don't get to excited and overexert yourself more than 10% in distance in any given month...

In the past few weeks I've had episodes where I can't breath when I get excited - its my old symptoms popping back up.. My electrical system is really screwed up.. It reminds me of a blast from the past - I know its a matter of time - before I'll be lucky to be able to walk, talk and breath at the same time. But I'm going to go as long as I can and as easy as I can.. I'm just having to much fun to stop.. and I know there's NO cure for heart disease - I just have to enjoy what I can.. and go with the 'flow'.... keep my docs on top of things and hopefully give me the best quality of life for as long as possible. :)

Hang in there and keep up the good work.. This is what makes life FUN.. I can't wait to get my racing bike out... My docs have advised against 'racing' - so I'll just 'finish' the race and be HAPPY !!!!

I hope you make out well with the docs. Keep us posted.

Take care and good luck

Best Wishes
