Hi all, I'm long overdue checking in. To refresh your memory, I was scheduled for an aortic valve replacement with a homograft valve, closure of ventricular septal defect, and Cox-Maze procedure on February 1st. The surgery went well except that they were not able to do the Cox-Maze procedure, as they ran into an abnormality they did not expect. I wasn't told exactly what this abnormality is but I was told it is not critical, it just prevented them from doing Cox-Maze.

On Feb. 8th I had to go in for a second surgery because I had what initially looked like an infection in the incision, so they needed to go in and clean me out. As it turned out the cultures came back negative, but Dr. Lee was taking no chances. As a result I've had a gaping wound, covered with a wound-vac, since that date, but the wound is healing well. Subsequent cultures of the wound have also come back negative.

I have been at a rehab hospital for the last two weeks getting therapy. There is a limit to what they have been able to do with me, however, since I am a wheelchair user under sternal precautions. Initially I was given the impression that by now I would be able to transfer myself from bed to wheelchair, carefully, but it has not worked out that way and to be honest I don't feel ready yet. Plans are in motion to transfer me to a skilled nursing facility for a few weeks, until sternal precautions are lifted.

In general, though, I feel like I have been doing well, my energy has been up lately and I am eating well. I still am hoping to be able to take my Gatlinburg vacation (booked before I found out I needed surgery) from April 29-May 6.

crawl before you walk, then baby steps then ...............keep moving forward

Edward, it sounds like u are doing very well considering all that went on.
At 4 weeks post op there was no way that I could use my sternum for anything. Take it slow and best wishes.

Thanks so much for the update, i've wonderred how you were doing. Sorry to hear about the 2nd surgery, but very glad to hear there wasn't any infection. Hopefully the wound heals quicker with the wound vac and you can get off the precautions and start your reall recovery. I hope they are giving you excercises you can do in bed to help keep your arm muscles in the best shape so its a little easier once you are off the restrictions.

Sorry to hear about your second surgery, Edward. Take things slowly and one day at a time. Continuing positive thoughts and best wishes for a smoother recovery.

6 months-plus post op ....

6 months-plus post op ....

Oh my.... long time since I've checked in here. I'm slightly amazed that I remembered my password.

I passed 6 months post-op at the beginning of this month. Life is pretty much back to normal. I returned to work at the beginning of May, and took a weekend trip to Snowshoe Mountain, in east-central West Virginia, for a bluegrass festival on Fourth of July weekend. And this weekend, I'm heading down to Washington D.C., stopping on the way in Hagerstown this evening for a friend's wedding.

After this, my next big trip is to the Uprise Festival, a 1 1/2 day Christian music festival on Sept. 16-17 in Shippensburg, PA. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the band Fireflight; their song "Unbreakable" was my theme song during my recovery. (There's a video for the song on YouTube, if you care to look it up.)

I am getting occupational and physical therapy twice a week at my local HealthSouth rehab hospital.

I was NOT able to take my trip to Gatlinburg. Thank God, I purchased trip protection for that, and was able to get my timeshare exchange fee back. I booked a trip to Branson, Missouri next May 5-12, so if any of you are in that area, drop me a line; I always enjoy meeting up with online forum friends when I travel.
