How long post op before one should engage in sexual activity?
I keep forgetting to ask my Dr. :D

if you're healthy enough to ask..........

umm, this have anything to do with your boy's club meeting? the weekend bender?
you're not hiring strippers are you? will they be wearing therapeutic pasties?

note: if you can climb two flights of stairs without sob, you can safely engage.
just be careful of the sternum, no push-ups.

(was it just coincidence that this post appeared just above "finally have a date"?)

My post op book i got from the hospital when i was discharged said 4-6 weeks, but i did tell my hubby it was a printing error and it should of said 4-6 months. LOL

ok, since no one else has wondered aloudly....

what makes you think your dr wants to have ***?

Remind me again - what's ***?

dunno.gif

Yep - serious is good, sometimes!!! According to my surgeon, if I felt like having ***, I could have ***. Just had to be careful of the sternum. And he told me that the day I was released from the hospital. Not because I asked, DH did...you know how some men are.....that is all they think about and since it had been a week already, he was going nuts!! LOL Good luck! :D

The obvious answer is to ask your surgeon, and you should.

My hospital OHS guide said I could "resume sexual activities as soon as you feel ready to do so."

Like most other males, I took that to mean first chance I got. One caution: if you've had a sternotomy, you should not be on top. Not even a little.

If you don't have other health issues, and had standard valve replacement/repair, and your doctor hasn't specifically told you a reason why you must refrain from ***, there is no automatic "waiting period" required by the surgery itself. Whoever wrote the 4-6 weeks in that one hospital guide simply pulled the number from his or her butt - or maybe figured it was "logical" to tie it to the healing of the sternum. No science to it. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to go a little easy for a while.

Not everyone heals at the same pace, or is affected the same way by things, so some may not be ready for *** right out of the box. Most people in the US are put on beta blockers after valve surgery, so the beta blocker may affect things for some males. But if you are ready, and have no other issues going on, you should be fine for it. The only problem is that you could have trouble chasing your intended around the room, as you can't run as fast as normal, and may not be able to catch her.

What it all boils down to is that you'll know when you're ready. There's no magic waiting period. If you're interested enough to ask, you're probably ready.

Best wishes,

For the basic "run of the mill" sexual encounter....with the heart patient on bottom....there is no real danger.
Now, if you're talking about the "earth moving, scrape me off the ceiling" sexual encounter....better wait a while.
;)

You people crack me up! :)

Thanks for the responses, serious and otherwise. :D

You don't always have to drive. Maybe she would be willing to pull the load this time?
