Okay, valvathletes, valvathoners, and trivalvers, time to step up and register your resolutions for 2006! No pressure

My primary goal is to loose 30 lbs. Lost 40 in 2004. Gained 20 back in 2005:eek: It's time to get to true "fighting weight". I'll do this by eating less and exercising more (radical concept - I know). If in the process, I PR my 10K run and Sprint Tri, so much the better.:)

Anybody else?

I have two goals. I intend to lose the 15 pounds I picked up while waiting for surgery and with my new valve, I intend to start running along with my swimming.
I'm following the plan suggested in previous threads--seven cycles of one minute running to two minutes walking with weekly increases in the amount of running time and corresponding decreases in the walking.
We'll see how it goes!:)

Perhaps if I put my resolution on here you could all keep on at me to check I'm working at it?!

I want to loose 2 stone - about 28-30 lbs. Its gone on since the children and it doesnt seem to want to shift. Funnily enough the Christmas chocolates dont seem to have helped matters either?!

Well seeing as the first part of your goal for 2006 was my goal LAST year (and that I didn't make it, or even come close), I've decided that THIS year my goal will be to quash your goal!

Kidding!

For a while now I've had this "bright" idea that I could participate in one of the local 5k runs they have around here for various causes... Trouble is, I've never, EVER run like that before, not even walked, and one of these days I might break down and try to make that change...

I guess it's just harder to start if you haven't been doing it all along.

Tom - great idea! Happy New Year! My goal is to be kind to myself and set modest expectations for the year in terms of physical accomplishments. I want to keep the weight off, eat right, and most of all be patient! I read this morning that it takes to 2 to 3 years to come back fully from ACL surgery - got to be the same for the heart right???

I talked offline yesterday with another valver who brought up the idea of having a five person relay of OHS/valvers complete a marathon. I thought it was a great idea!! I think we have the numbers - just need to find a time/place convenient to all. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2006!

Mark,

Count me "IN" for a valver marathon relay. Grand idea!

Tom - the fellow who thought it up is Paul Hobbs who proposed the Burlington VT relay in May 2006. I would come over if we could get 5 OHS to do it. Even if it's not Vermont - I think we have the numbers to do this sometime, somewhere - just need to think it through and find one that is available to all. I love the idea of getting some publicity for our cause - we really need a national database of adults with congenital heart disease to get to the next level and this kind of activity is a good way to promote the cause! Let's show the world that life is great after OHS!!! Mark

I just today gave up drinking soda which I am sure has been my downfall. I want to lose 20 pounds by my birthday in April. I think I can manage it (and maybe a little more). I know I will never be the 119 pounds I was until I got sick but I am sure I can get back into a size 8 (reasonable for my 5'8" frame).

Exercise will continue to be Pilates, walking and, once the warmer weather gets here, back to swimming.

Good luck all.

by dieting and exercise. I think when my energy level increases, I should be better able to exercise. The question is, do I get to include the 20 lbs. I lost since surgery? I probably gained 15 waiting for surgery...

Kristi,

You can include whatever benchmark you desire - its all up to you.

I also gained weight like crazy prior to surgery and lost about 15 in the process of surgery and recovery (surgery 11/27/00 - almost exactly 5 years ahead of you).

I would think that as you lose weight, you will tolerate exercise better with each pound. And as you exercise more, the weight will come off faster.

Please be careful, though, and check with your doctor about exercise so close after surgery. I suggest doctor-prescribed cardiac rehab. It worked wonders for me. Taught me to be patient and persistent - to make small increments.

Thanks for "weighing in" :D with your resolution.

Therein lies the most valuable advice. Research shows that it takes six months of regular activity for a new habit to take hold and even then you can relapse. Most people fail with new habits for one of two reasons: (i) inadequate support system; (ii) goals are too big or they need to be broken down into realistic steps. With exercise too, I think it's important that you actually like the activity - for me it's running but some people hate running (my wife!). Good luck to all!

Fitness goals for 2006? My husband Tom and I actually started on this two days after Thanksgiving and only took the 3 pre-planned days off for Christimas. I have some limitations with exercise but find I can do 15-20 minutes on the treadmill before sciatica or shortness of breath becomes a factor so I've been doing that twice a day. I can't tolerate much speed (3.4 is about my tops) nor any incline but I'm not going to worry about that. I just need to keep moving.

We also started a set diet plan at that time and my weight is finally dropping. Like many others I really gained weight in the year before surgery and added more pounds with every new medication. So far I have lost about 14 lbs and I can feel the difference. Tom has lost at least that much.

I can not afford to carry around extra weight so my goal this year is to reach the "healthy weight" section on the charts and stay there!

Signed up for cardiac rehab today.

Signed up for cardiac rehab today.

Thanks Tom...it was nice to hear some encouraging words. I spoke to a friend of mine tonight that thinks gastric bypass is the only way and he was very discouraging. He kept asking me why it was any different now and I tried to explain how heart surgery has been a life changing experience...he didn't get it. I really feel like I will be able to lose 50 lbs this year, slowly and without compromising my health.

Until I had heart surgery, I was all for gastric bypass for myself. I even asked my surgeon how soon after surgery could I have it done. I don't feel that way at all now...I want to stay away from hospitals and complications!
