my inr has been a steady 3.1 on 8 mgs warfarin per day. i test myself with my coaguchek every 2 weeks.

today i tested 2.4 mgs; i guess i have been more active lately.

so my plan is to up the dose to 9mgs for the next 2 nights and then alternate between 8 and 9 and retest my self in 6 days

sound ok to you guys?

n.b. i do not go to labs and manage warfarin 100 % by myself

Actually, I'd wait one more test before changing it. Could be just something weird happening at this time and it may be normal next time around.

khamis: everyone's body handles warfarin differently. I take 6mg a day and pretty steady at 2.8.
Another member takes 19mg a WEEK and is stable in their range.

isn't it too much 8 mgs per day why are you taking this I'm taking 3.5 per day and my INR is about 2.5. sorry i don't have an answer for you but a question.

Everyone is different. One person may get by on as little as 2mg a day and someone else 20mg a day. It just depends on your bodies ability to metabolize the drug.

The correct dose is that which keeps you in your prescribed range, whatever that dose may be.

I took coumadin for a little over 2 months post op and had gotten up to 88 mg per week and never reached 2.0 INR. (My INR manager told me to up to 96 mg and test again in two weeks but that is when I told her that would be my last visit with her.) My doctors let met stop taking it before I ever reached therapeutic range. I have tissue valve and it is common for doctors to order a brief time on coumadin post surgery with tissue valve.

My doctors and INR manager all explained to me I was metabolizing coumadin way more than the average person. I was active quite soon after surgery walking good distances fairly early on in recovery.

The only 'right' amount is the amount each patient needs to keep their INR in the desired range.
