Yesterday we had our day filled with doctor appointments and tests which was a very exhausting day for me. My first appointment was with the Nephrology doctor at Froedtert who told us that even though my kidneys are abnormal, they are fully functional and doesn?t see the kidneys as the source of the problem for my recurrent UTI?s. It might be a problem with my actual bladder itself. After I am all healed I will go to the Urologist, but right now I?m just focused on getting better and will deal with this other issue later. They drew some blood and sent me on my merry way.

I then went to Children?s Hospital to their lab to have more blood work done. After that we wheeled on over to Radiology for my usual chest xray. Matt wheeled me a little too close to the wall in there. After the pain subsided, we chuckled about it. After Radiology, we headed over to the Herma Heart Center to see my wonderful Cardiologist, Dr. Michael Earing. He looked at the xray and saw that most of the fluid was off of my lungs. I was soooooooooo happy to hear this. The last thing I wanted was for them to have to drain it. My wires that closed my sternum are looking good and are still all tied tightly. My diaphragm is still sitting pretty high and he is hoping in about 3-6 months for that to be back into place. I have a bulge on the top of my sternum that clicks sometimes so I did ask about that. That will hopefully go away in about 3-6 months as well. She did feel with her hands that when I moved or coughed or something like that the sternum was rubbing together and that is what is causing the clicking noise. Dr. Earing would like me to start Cardiac Rehab next week, so today I called and set all that up. My first ?workout? is next Friday. We did change my pain meds due to the amount of pain I was having in my back. My back is hurting more than my chest does. He said it was from all the muscles that were strained from the surgery also go all the way around to the back. According to him, it?s the biggest complaint of open heart patients. So last night I took the new pain med ?Morphine?. I was able to get up the stairs last night were I wasn?t the night before because of the pain. I actually got about 6 hrs of sleep last night. It was great. So all in all things look good. I have to go back to see him in 3 weeks.

My appetite is slowly returning. I am having some really weird cravings though. Things I never ate before, I like now. I even ate frozen pizza today. It?s really weird. It?s like being pregnant all over again without an actual baby. Matt is looking forward to going back to work and getting away from all these weird cravings I think.

I am continuing taking my walks in the house and outside. Today I walked outside without holding on to Matt. I only made one mistake? I forgot my heart pillow that I hold over my chest in the house. Matt ran back in for it for one split second and the dog jumped right up on my chest. OH MY GOD? I didn?t think pain could get any worse. I calmed down and let the pain subside a bit and went for my walk anyway.

I?m happy with my recovery thus far and I look forward to the day when I can do things on my own without needing help or depending on others to do it. I know it will take time; I?m just a little impatient.

I again want to thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes throughout these last few months. All of you are truly inspirational to me.

Many of us have found that MASSAGE works Better and Faster than any Pain Medication at relieving Back Muscle PAIN.

My S.O. uses a 2.5 inch diameter Vibrating Disk Massager to run along the Long Muscles that become over-tensioned and the relief comes in just a few passes, typically a minute or two.

PATIENCE is Key to Recovery. It always goes Slower than we would like. That's just the nature of the beast. :-(

How Big was that Dog? :)

Keep up the good work. Let's get the heart healed before anything else. I know what you are saying there. I have things lined up for the next 6 weeks myself.

Tell your husband to work on the driving. I hope he wasn't drinking? :p

Happy to hear that you are progressing so well! Don't rush things & watch out for the dog!

Long, leisurely baths used to help me with the body aches, just be careful getting out of the tub.

Stay well!:)

Laura, I just finished reading through your recent threads...leading up to and after your surgery. I felt like I was with each step of the way--experiencing the same emotions and even the same back pain! I'm now at 9 weeks out and it does get much better. Hopefully you will be able to continue getting a good night's sleep and take it easy during the day. Spring is here and summer will follow soon enough. Take time to smell the flowers, let the sun shine on your face and enjoy making it to this side of the mountain! Wishing you a bump free recovery. Jane

Laura, so great to hear how things are progressing for you. I think it sounds amazing
that you were able to endure a dog slam, those pets love us so much they just can't wait
to express it. Best wishes as you continue this journey. Laura

Hi Laura,

It is good to hear from you and happy that all is well. Do not worry about the bulge...I had one too and it went aways slowly within 5 weeks.

Stay patient and do not rush recovery...let others spoil you until you really feel up to it.

Hi Laura,
Im so glad things are going so well for you, you seem to be making a great recovery, you sound like me, i wanted to do so much but just couldnt, dont over do things coz in the end you do suffer. So you got a border collie, they are brillant dogs we have 3, hard work but worth it, Millie is 4, Madie 2 and a puppy Frankie she is 7 months now.
You take it easy, and take care,
Jane

Isn't that cool? I was the same way. I think most of us are. Stuff we'd never normally touch, suddenly appeals to us.

Does this ever go away? Cuz some of the stuff I used to love, like butter pecan ice cream (my favorite thing in the world) taste like medicine to me now. I don't mind adding new stuff into my life but the things I used to love are hard to give up, even though they don't taste right.

Hi Jane,

You are very brave to have 3 border collies. They are very smart and need alot of attention. Ours is 3 yrs old and her name is Peeps. She was a gift from the "Easter Bunny" when she was 6 weeks old. Was hoping she would keep the blue eyes she came with but no luck. Shes' a good dog. Just got a little too excited the other day.

I have always kept an open mind to food. I eat alot of seafood, if I see it I eat it. I have tried many types of food in my life including up to & including lamb's brain. I was never really affected by cravings or anything except a difference in taste. I hope this holds true in the near future.
