First, for those who remember my pre-surg posts, I didn't make the 20mile cycling event but I was there at the start to support the riders. LIke many of you wrote, it would have been a bad idea at 5 wks to ride. But, at 10 weeks post-op I'm doing really well. I started rehab, but I informed the staff at the center, much to their dismay, that I'll be there just 1x a week and I'll be working out 3x at home. I'm back on my bike, but clearly not riding at my normal pace, nor have I gone more than about 10 miles. Sternal area is sensitive but no pain, although I avoid testing it. I would not do any bench presses or anything crazy like that. By the way, some of us guys also do housework and I am now vacuuming and mopping the hardwood, and have been for the last 2 wks at least.
My biggest challenge continues to be the peripheral neuopathy in my right leg. Had nerve damage from being on the OR table for so long; the result is foot pain. Both ankles still a little swollen (also had CABGx3), so that prohibits me from fast walking or joggin. When the Ohio weather doesn't facilitate cycline, I'm on my upright stationery bike at home, with less time on my treadmill for reasons already stated.
I went back to work (office job) at 6wks. I somewhat reluctantly obtained a temporary (6mo) handicap hang tag for the car. I only use it to minimize long walks from the car to my destination. In Ohio, having had open heart surgery justifies obtaining a temp tag. This has proven to be a very good idea.
I think many people use the forum to compare their recuperation to those of others, but I think this is so individualized based on ones condition pre-surg, what exactly was done in the OR, meds taken, support at home, etc.
