    Teenager - one year on.

Thank you! It does add another layer of ‘excitement’ and a few more grey hairs!

    Teenager - one year on.

My son (now 16) had his surgery a year ago today. He had a few set backs in the hospital and we left to go back home 3 weeks later absolutely terrified and traumatised as his Anti Coagulation team had made us feel like he was a ‘ticking time bomb’ his life as we knew it was over and we had to...

    Facing a 2nd operation

Hi Nik - I am sorry you are feeling this way. Try not to fear mechanical valves or warfarin - it may seem like too much to cope with but in my experience (with my son) once everything settles down after surgery it isn't too much to deal with and life carries on just with some minor adjustments...

    Lancets for INR testing

Thanks for your response. He varies each time which finger he uses and he goes on the side of the finger as per advice. He was using the rubber band method but it doesn’t help with the problem. The finger looks ready (nice & pink) but he draws no blood. it’s more that the needle is not...

    Lancets for INR testing

Oddly my son has been really struggling lately with the yellow coaguchek lancets - they just don’t seem to be penetrating his skin like they used to and he often has to try 3 or 4 times to get even a sight of blood. His hands are warm and he’s using enough pressure so I wonder if we need to...

I have had 2 valve replacements within the past 3 years I just want to know if someone is having the same problems as me

How funny you logged on out the blue to my message! It really is a special community for support and advice. Appreciate your response. I am going to get him a chiropractor appointment I think so they can take a look at it. It does really takes his breath away although it does seem to pass...

I have had 2 valve replacements within the past 3 years I just want to know if someone is having the same problems as me

Hi Appreciate you wrote this some time ago now but it sounds very similar to what my son experiences and I was wondering if he still has these episodes or if you ever worked out what it was. Many thanks Emma

    Fragmin / Dalteparin Injections

Hiya Just wondering the general consensus on the need for the injections if you drop below your range temporarily. It seems there is different takes on this and I was wondering what the lived experience is of this from those on here. This isn’t about bridging for a procedure, just if you test...

    Confused about advice

I’m not sure yet - he’s not had a knock since he’s been on it! We will have to wait and see on that one 🫣

    Confused about advice

Interesting as he does suffer really bad hayfever and they have assured me that hayfever or anti histamines won’t affect his INR…..I guess we will have to see come summer time how he reacts.

    Confused about advice

Yes I get the metabolism side of things for differences in INR - it’s only the bruising /bleeding outcomes I am questioning re the age.

    Confused about advice

Thank you everyone for your comments - I really find it helpful to hear them all. I appreciate no one is going to say everything will be ok because of course no one knows this, on warfarin or not. That’s why your opinions are so helpful to me in sorting out my own thoughts. For those that have...

    Confused about advice

He doesn’t really have INR spikes - generally he’s pretty steady. But his team like him to be slightly over 3 despite his range being 2-3. Which I have spoken to them about before and it fell on deaf ears. He was on IV antibiotics when he went to 6.9 - I don’t know if that made the difference...

    Confused about advice

I try really hard not to be an overly cautious mum - I really don’t want to be. But its a fine line most of the time - and not just with my son who’s on warfarin! We’re a pretty sensible family we understand risk and we work with it every day. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on...

    Confused about advice

Thanks for your reply. That’s how I feel too. I want him to live his life and have fun. If anything this whole process of OHS has proved the importance of this. But it can be hard to rationalise it when the people you’re supposed to look up to for their knowledge and expertise say things that...

    Confused about advice

Thanks for your message. Agree there is nothing wrong with stamp collecting if you enjoy it! :) Also agree life itself is risky and we judge what risks we deem are worth taking. I suppose part of my frustration lies in the lack of research / knowledge of young people on warfarin. But it...

    Confused about advice

My son is 15 and had his surgery for mechanical valve 6 months ago and is on warfarin. This whole time he has been asking his cardiologist when he can play football. Initially pre op he was told 6 weeks……. Obviously this was ridiculous and I’ve no idea why he was told that in the first place...
