Pre Surgery Questions - AVR. Based in Australia.

Hi Mate, I live in Sydney and 2 years ago today I had OHS to replace my bicuspid with a mechanical one. I was 42 then. I was initially referred to Dr Manu Mathur at the North Shore Private Hospital. He also recommended I have a chat with Dr Skillington which I did but my aorta was enlarged for...

    2 year anniversary - AVR

This time 2 years ago I would've been having OHS to replace my bicuspid aortic valve with an upgraded mechanical version :) 2 years on, I gym 3-4 days a week, check my INR weekly and still enjoy a beverage or two! 🍻 I've been overseas on work trips multiple times post OHS and bring my...

Mental state before and after surgery

I had this done July last year to replace my BAV and aorta with the Bentall procedure, I'm 44 now. My life is 100% back to normal and sometimes forget I had OHS lol. All the issues including LVEF (it was 45%) and LV mass size all recovered back to normal ranges 6 months post operation. IMO...

What amount of alcohol do people notice a change in their INR

Hi There, I love a beer. To be honest, my drinking habits haven't really changed since being on Wafarin. I drink less post my OHS last year though. I found having 2-3 beers doesn't increase INR. During the Xmas period though, I discovered INR was a bit more challenging. I had to monitor my...

Saying hi - 41 year old with BAV and surgery "soon"

Hi John, I'm 43 yo and had AVR surgery with a mechanical aortic valve last July. Honestly nothing has changed for me apart from being a Cyborg now :) Good choice on the mechanical given your age, it's the main reason I went with it and not having to have another surgery down the line. Post OHS...

Upcoming SAVR - Thanks for the support!

Hi, Good luck with your surgery and recovery! I'm just over 1 year since my AVR surgery with a mechanical aortic valve, I'm 43 yo. Honestly for me nothing has changed apart from being a Cyborg now :) I went mechanical because of my 'youngish' age and wanted a 'one and done' outcome. For me...

New member intro! Aorta replacement scheduled for Oct 9

Good luck with your surgery and recovery! I'm just over a year since my AVR surgery with a mechanical aortic valve. Honestly nothing has changed apart from being a Cyborg now :) For me, the first 3 weeks post OHS were the hardest. But once I got into week 4-5 and beyond things started to...

    4 weeks post-surgery

I eat and drink what I want whilst I've been on Wafarin. no changes for me :) yes drinking alcohol may elevate it but I just adjust my dose if I'm outside my INR range, all good. The benefits of self testing at home :)

To metoprolol or not to metoprolol

I stopped metoprolol about 3 months after my AVR. I didn't wan't to stay on it for long, and as soon as my HR went back to normal, high 60s low 70s I stopped it with the doctors approval.

Valve selection question from someone who travels half of the year

Hi mate, I had my BAV replaced last year with mechanical. I frequently travel overseas for work and I've had no issues with managing my INR and Wafarin. I self test and bring my machine with me when travelling. Hope you're operation and recovery went well :)

    1 year anniversary

Hi Folks, Yep, today is the one year mark since open heart surgery to replace my BAV with a mechanical valve. All the issues with my heart that I had due to the BAV all resolved with the mech valve. My life returned to 'normal' pretty quick after OHS, I'd say about 5-6 weeks post I felt my...

    Facing a 2nd operation

I like you was fearful about Wafarin before my AVR last July. You shouldn't be nervous about Wafarin. I've been on it for 9 months now, seriously no big deal. I test once a week and at times make small adjustments where required. Self managing your INR at home really helps with the overall...

    38/M - 5.5 weeks post AV/Root Replacment (Surgeon Selection, Recovery & Pericarditis)

Hey no worries mate. I'm happy to have helped you out! @Timmay did the same for me during my OHS experience and he lives on the other side of the earth (US), it helped me a lot! Also @pellicle has greatly helped with my INR management and understanding of it. I hope you get over the...

    Where did my tastebuds go?

Yep it happened to me. Everything tasted different, bland and salty post my AVR, my taste came back to normal by about week 3 or 4.

6 month post surgery echo - results

Haha thanks Chuck! Yes, I better not drink 2 glasses 🤣 what a myth from doctors about consuming alcohol whilst on Wafarin. "You're only allowed the occasional glass of wine at dinner" two drinks doesn't even change my INR and they wouldn't even touch the sides :ROFLMAO: four beers...

6 month post surgery echo - results

Yeah it was nice for a change seeing my Cardio for some positive news. And now it's all behind me! The last 10 or so visits (over 10 years) had been the opposite lol wondering when I will need surgery and hearing the negative changes etc that my Cardio was reporting.
