    Motorcyclists Choice

One of the first things I was told by my surgeon post op (3years ago, mechanical valve), "You can never ride a motorcycle again." Sorry, never going to happen! I've been riding since I was 12 years old (61 now). I lived on the Isles of Man, which for those that know, is a bikers heaven...

62 years old and meeting surgeon in 10 days to decide on valve type

I am 61 this year and have faced exactly the same thing 3 years ago. The ticking is reassuring as it tells me my heart is still beating and I am still alive. Managing your INR is easier than managing your diet!!! My valve was replaced 3 years ago........in Bangkok..........and as stated before...

Is it possible to travel internationally for six months of the year while on Warfarin?

Correct. Although prescriptions to the best of my knowledge don't work the same way in Thailand as they do in the West. Here you take your prescription to the pharmacy in the hospital. As I mentioned you can go to any government hospital see a doctor and get a prescription for warfarin very...

Is it possible to travel internationally for six months of the year while on Warfarin?

Actually, that's not true. My surgery was at the Police hospital in Bangkok. I went to the local government hospitals in both Suphanburi and Pattaya and had no problem getting a warfarin script. Don't quote me, but you may also be able to get in Fascino drug stores now as well.

    Drinking alcohol on warfarin

I am guilty of not heeding the doctor’s advice and I am, what I believe to be, a binge drinker. I have had my valve 2 years and soon after what I considered suitable recovery, started to hit the bottle quite hard. I self-test with great assistance and advice from @pellicle. I am also guilty of...

What is the one thing you couldn't live without during post-surgery recovery?

Living in Thailand it is very easy to find a carer at a very reasonable cost to come take care of you post op.

In all the excitement I clean forgot!!!

Just missed my first anniversary. On the table 3rd Feb last year. All good and a massive shout out to @pellicle, without who's help and guidance I would probably be a basket case. He really helped me through uncertainty and showed me the path to a life worth living and not the cotton wool clad...

    Adventure activities after OHS?

Drinking and riding fast motorcycles. That's the only adventure I see now. Not at the same time of course. 🙄😊

    Freshly Hatched and New

I can certainly vouch for that. Pellicle has been an enormous help in guiding me towards a stable INR. He has also eased my mind on some of the horror stories that you encounter when you start your warfarin journey. I am very grateful for his time and patience in sharing his knowledge with me.

    How scared should I be?

Yes I have a local blood clinic that would test daily if I wanted. No, I can't afford a self test machine. No, they didn't make sure my INR was in range before discharging me. Increasing the dose to 8mg is a big increase in a short time. What are the negative effects of a large increase, how...

    How scared should I be?

Good morning. Thanks for the reply. I must admit, now I am starting to get concerned with my obvious lack of knowledge and perhaps slightly blasé attitude to the operation. I maybe put too much faith in the medical professionals here and yes getting sick in Thailand is a bad thing especially if...

    How scared should I be?

Never had an injection. I was actually very surprised when they initially sent me off on 4mg a day and said see you in 3 months!!!!

    How scared should I be?

First of all thanks to all in taking time to reply. OK to answer your questions I am on 5mg Orafin and using 2mg MAforan Split in half for a 1mg dose. Yes I have a 7 day pill box box that I have sitting right next to my computer. No I don't have an alarm set on my phone. How critical is the time...

    How scared should I be?

Hi. I am new to all this and so thankful I found this forum. Some invaluable information from a wealth of experience. My aortic valve was replaced Feb 3 this year, so I am about 10 weeks post op. Don't ask me anything technical I don't yet have enough knowledge to answer you. Now to the real...
