Surgery this week and still Terrified

Hello, I am in South Jersey and see you are just across in PA. Have you had success finding a surgeon?

    73 And Scared

The worry is not doing the surgery. My 2nd surgery was at 66, not quite your 73, but in the neighborhood. We all on this forum are living proof that you can do this. Best wishes!

    Upcoming Surgery

Good luck with your surgery. Don't be concerned about the cath; it is really a breeze in comparison to everything else. It provides good data to your team, so not to worry, in my opinion. Regarding 10-14 days after surgery, personally I was still feeling every bump in the road when traveling...

My double heart valve replacment surgery update

Best wishes for an uneventful recovery, as the saying goes. Take it easy on yourself, slow and steady wins this race for sure.

    Decongestant with bovine aortic valve

I have never heard this. My surgeon said to avoid fluroquinolone antibiotics (Cipro, Levaquin), if that is relevant.

First post from Maryland - advice and support needed!

Bavaria was my surgeon (twice) and definitely an arrogant (or very self-confident) character.

Pls if anyone has their valve replaced with the inspiris resilia comment.

My 2nd AVR is an Inspiris Resilia. It has only been a year + (2.11.2020), but so far it is working fine as advertised.

    Choosing valve for surgery #2

Hi, I had 1st at age 57 to replace a BAV, 2nd at age 65, both OHS and I/my surgeon chose a bovine valve. I only had 7.5 years before my replacement valve became severely stenotic. The most recent valve is the Inspiris Resilia (sp?) which is expandable (for TAVR next time) and has an...

    A slight crisis of confidence

Can only echo what others have said: the emotional wait/anticipation/what-ifs, are much worse than the surgery itself. My 1st surgery at 58, 2nd at 65, were uneventful procedures. I highly recommend cardiac rehab for peace of mind afterwards. I have not needed additional hospital or doctor...

Tissue Valvers. How Old is Yours?

After my 2nd AVR, I also wondered why my valve calcified so quickly. There is some research indicating that very high lipoprotein (a) is linked to calcification. Who knows?? https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0033062020301225

Bovine valve installed 2011 - stenotic

I had a bovine installed 2012, and in Feb. 2020 another bovine valve. It is the Inspiris Resilia valve, and it does have anti-calcification properties, as well as the ability for valve-in-valve down the road. (Fingers crossed) For what it's worth, I was 57 1st surgery, and 65 years the 2nd OHS

Bovine valve installed 2011 - stenotic

I had my 1st valve replacement in October 2012 at age 57, and my 2nd was February 2020, so only 7.5 years before critical stenosis set in. Both were modified sternotomies. I had/have bovine valves for both. The newest valve is 4th generation technology and is expandable for in-valve replacement...

    2 weeks post op

I am 3 weeks post-op AVR #2. I was instructed to do just 2, 10-min walks each day, adding a minute or two gradually. I am up to 16/17 mins, but definitely have shortness of breath. Absolutely no dog walking before 6 weeks. I certainly am fatigued, and take an afternoon nap, even though I am...

Lipoprotein (a) connection to early aortic valve stenosis?

Thank you for the link. I did read it, but frankly a lot was pretty technical for my non-medical brain. The vitamin C connection is certainly interesting though.

Lipoprotein (a) connection to early aortic valve stenosis?

On 2/12/20, I had my 2nd AVR after just 7+ years. Yes, I know there are no answers "why" some valves fail far ahead of their lifespan estimates. My cardiologist and surgeon had no thoughts; sometimes it is just "luck", or genetics. That said, I personally found it dismaying to undergo this so...

    2nd AVR on my horizon : (

Can't concentrate on much right now. Still a lot of dozing time!

    2nd AVR on my horizon : (

Well, I am home just 6 days after OHS # 2. The surgeon again was limited on space in my chest, and I have an Insipirus #21. It is a newer generation valve with an anti-calcification coating. It is also expandable, so TAVR can be done down the road. Feeling like a train wreck, but blessed to be...
