diagnosed with BAV 3.5 weeks ago, surgery in 6 days - suggestions

I had a St Jude mechanical valve placed 6 months ago. I can hear it if I take time out of my life to just sit and listen, but on day to day activities I am busy enough enjoying life that I don't really give it much thought. Laying in bed at night I can hear it like a clock that is almost like...

    Power Recliners.

I had purchased a recliner that has power for the lift of the legs and the reclining back. It didn't lift me up out of the chair. I thought it was perfect for what I needed. I would have not been too keen on using the manual lever to lift the foot rest. Good Luck!

    Perplexed on what to eat

I know we need to be consistent with eating leafy green veggies. I am the type of person that likes to eat a salad occasionally but not every day. So do I give it up all together or go ahead and eat it occasionally and not worry too much about it? With trying to eat low sodium and just getting...

    Sleeping arrangements/pillows

Meredith, I have a wedge pillow but haven't used it at all. I don't like to sleep on my back either and I think this pillow is good for back sleepers. As a side sleeper I am struggling to get back to my bed. I find I like to lay on my side and turning into the pillow so almost on my stomach...

    Spastic Breathing

Just curios if anyone else has had this happen to them. You know when you cry really hard and do that "snort" of air? I do this multiple times a day. I have no warning that its coming. Feels like a big attempt to get air? I am 5 weeks out and feeling great!

    BAV - first post!

I am scheduled for AVR and Root repair on December 10th. For me symptoms have come on gradually so they are almost unnoticeable when they happen. I can report I am really tired (physically and sleepy) a lot of the time. Going up a flight of stairs can leave me winded for a few minutes too. I...

12 days to go Holy Moley!

I just wanted to wish you all the best in your surgery tomorrow. The great part is once you go to sleep then it will feel like you blink and its done. I know you will do just wonderful! I am two weeks behind you on the 10th of December. See you on the other side.

How are you comfortable in your waking hours?

I had my pre-surgery cath on Monday. Spent most of the next day in bed relaxing. I would like to find a way of sitting up in bed and watching TV beyond putting a bunch of pillows together. I have used those pillows with arms before and they are okay, not great. What do you all find...

    Pre-Surgery mind games

My surgery is scheduled on December 10th. I have found these pre-surgery weeks to be a wide range of emotions. What I think is the weirdest is that in daily life I just go on about my business and then BAM! I remember I am having major, risky surgery. Its almost like I am being told this every...

Leg and ankle cramping w/ BAV

I have had cramping in my legs. It first was just the area just to the outside of the bone but not shin splints. I can tell its muscle related. Now when I walk for exercise both legs cramp up from the knees down. Its that "feel the burn" pain that you get when you exercise. Its just very...

    Sleepy or physically tired?

I have seen a lot of people stating they are tired before surgery. I suffer from day time sleepiness and have sleep apnea with a cpap unit. Even with the unit I am still sleepy. I would like to change jobs but the last time I changed and went through training I about didnt make it out as I...

Do you all have or will get a medical ID if you are going to be on blood thinner?

Cooling the body down freaks me a bit

Went to the Dr. a few days ago to discuss surgery. He was explaining how since they will be replacing part of the aorta that they will be cooling my body down, taking all the blood out and keeping my brain alive on the heart/lung machine. I of course like any good patient that wants to know...

Exercise Test - BP went down instead of up?

I think my time in the WR is about up. Went to cardiologist last week and did a stress test. I didn't get to finish the test as the tech stopped it. My heart rate goes up but my blood pressure goes down when I exercise. I have a feeling this is a deal breaker and will have to have surgery...

    The Surgeon Choice...

Does the hospital ranking really mean that much? I would place more value on getting the valve you want, personal attention and location than just the hospital ranking. I am gearing up to have AVR and will be going to my hospital that is about an hour away. I really like that I can go and...

So glad you made it safely to the other side. The hard part is done (waiting) and now the healing can begin. One day at a time.

Pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but wanted confirmation

Thanks for all your replies and open discussion. One thing I have learned in all this is that every situation is different and how we handle each of those situations is different too. So there could be lots of answers to this. I have been told to not lift anything heavy so that is what...

Pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but wanted confirmation

We aren't supposed to shovel snow, right? I want to help my husband as he is at work all day and we just got about 8 inches. He just seems to think I am being lazy but I am pretty sure this is a no no. BTW... I am in the waiting room as my aneurysm is 4.8 and symptoms have started to...
