    frequency of testing?

Ski girl, it sounds like you need another coumadin manager! Results delayed are worthless to make corrections with! You definitately need to self test, and learn as much as you can about managing yourself, because your doctor and his/her staff are trying to kill you through negligence!

A Global Hero is a runner - Apply for the 2013 Global Heroes team today

Verrry interesting. I passed this along to a friend who is a member of the Dallas Running Club. SHE's got RA and is not eligible, but I'll bet there are some eligible people here in Texas!

    Afib and Valve problems

Oh DOOOOO talk to your doctor about the Maze. I had one, and my afib is nonexistent now (although I am on extra beta blockers for v-tach, plus the coreg for heart failure!). Although, there is a possibility after the surgery, esp. with the Maze, you may require a pacemaker. NBD, it beats feeling...

    Cooker's Throwdown Friday... 3-22-13

I'm FAT. The scale is going in the wrong direction, despite diet and exercise. Should I blame age or the beta blockers? I did my third weekly yoga class on Wednesday, and I am SORE. But it will help me build strength, improve flexibility, and make me do something on the mornings I can't face...

Dental extraction with INR of 4.7

Yep, we're not gonna bleed to death. Monday, I had a very small basal cell carcinoma removed from my upper arm, with an INR of 4.2 (Probably had something to do with the antibiotics from the dentist a few days before, but that was unusual to get that reaction. I don't usually). The Dermo. knew...

    Valve Choice- Decisions, Decisions

I don't know that the coumadin affects the kidneys. Diuretics, yes, but not the coumadin. As for the dye - yes check with your nephrologist. The cardiac cath is so they know whether they also need to do a bypass while they have you cracked open - wrap all that surgery into one package. It's...

    Heart enlargement

I had regurge. My cardio triggered surgery when he first saw any enlargement of the ventricle, plus increased regurge, decreased EF. But I dunno the numbers. I had tiny symptoms for 2 weeks prior to visit and was going to ask when he said "it's time."

    AV Node Issues and AVR

MVR, simultaneous maze procedure (large scale ablation during OHS) for a-fib; later AVR and Vtach. I take sotalol (a type of beta blocker) for the v-tach, and it stays well under control. I did not know they used ablation for the v-tach - just for the a-fib.

    few ?'s

If you are on an ACE inhibitor for blood pressure, those can trigger migraines. The ACE inhibitor degrades into nitrites with aggravate migraines. I had to switch to an ARB rather than ACE inhibitor for that reason. I can't use nitroglycerine, either, though ideally my cardio would like me on it...

    Race medals...

Others have done that, and similar things, as little "thank yous." I think most of the doctors get a kick out of it. Maybe send it with a picture of you crossing the finish line? I sent a picture of me and my dog at our first post-surgical agility trial to my cardio and my surgeon. The surgeon...

    Heart monitors.

I did not have any luck with the wrist only monitor, because of my pacemaker, I guess. I have to use one with the chest strap. I too, use Polar.

    Cooker's Throwdown Friday ... 2-8-13

I just came back from a cruise so I am up 3.5 lbs, but still down .3 for the year. I walked 2 miles each day around the ship (and/or snorkeled for 45 minutes which is the moral equivalent) did 3 yoga classes, plus 4.6 miles on the stationary bike on Sunday. Now it's back to the straight and...

    Cooker's Throwdown Friday ... 2-1-13

I'm up a smidge today, but I have been too busy to get much exercise in this week. I'll start counting miles as of today. We've had birthdays and lunch meetings at the office, so it's not too bad all things considered. WW Start:146.3 last Monday WW: 142.5 this Monday WW 142.0 Today 142.8...

    Cookers Throwdown Friday ... 1-25-13

I like this idea. I usually get close to 2 miles on the elliptical in 30 minutes (so it says) and I do another mile at work at lunch time, but barely get off the couch some weekends. If the weather would cooperate, I'd get in 3/4 to 1 mile in the evening with Jet, too, but in the dark days of...

4 th month aniversarry and one question....

Sounds like perhaps you DO need medication for the arrhythmia. Lots of people take meds for about 3 months after surgery, then get weaned off some of them. But some of us are on them for life. It's a case by case basis. An electrophysiocardiologist, or EP is the heart "electrician" like the...

BUMMED OUT. Juicing / Vitamin K etc..

You are binging on Kale, which is the highest possible Vit K containing leafy green! Of COURSE your INR is going to drop. Spinach or cabbage or brussels sprouts have 1/2 to 1/3 as much K per serving, but if you've not been eating many greens in your diet, you are going to have to adjust your...

    Mental Block. Depression. Confusion.

I think Greg has a point. You've had a health crisis at a younger age than most people ever do. That tends to mature one. OHS and other health issues like it frequently result in depression. Meds and talk therapy can help. Reach out to Mended Hearts if there is a Heart Association chapter near...

    Forgot to take my Warfarin

Eh, maybe. I've taken the prior evening's doseage the next morning if I forgot. I've run my INR in the morning, found I was low, and taken part of my week's increased dose (assuming an adjustment was required) immediately, followed by the regular dose in the evening. that's adding back 2/3 of...

    Sensitive subject.....

Y'a know, I've thought about this too. I've decided that if the SHTF, I want to be at the center of the fan. Poof, no more worries.

    Cookers Throwdown Friday ... 1-25-13

I'm in the holding pattern this week; Start wt. 146.3 Last week: 142.5 Monday (WW weigh in) 142.5 Today: 143.3 Up a tad, but it's probably fluid, as I'm doing my ellliptical (not real hard, but as hard as I can, and extending the time), and I'm staying w/in my WW points.
