Half marathons - Medtronic Twin Cities marathon

SO, we had a BIG meet up this weekend at the Baltimore Running Festival.....many VR's there, including my new best friend Rachel! I heard baout this new restriction since I was a Global Hero, you must have run and finished a race of the same length before being a GH. We now call that the Tom...

New to the board and AVR

I forgot to mention the drugs you are taking. The Metopropol is a beta blocker that acts like a governor on your heart; it won't let it beat too fast. SO, as you work out and run, you will be very limited by your HR. The Amiodarone is a antiarrythmatic which again keeps your HR low. So...

New to the board and AVR

I would agree with Kodi. I would probably be too hard headed not to try the Army 10 miler. But as you can tell, most of us think that's a pretty agressive goal. You will find your training psot op will not be linear; it will go in fits and starts. You will go weeks with little improvement...

Half marathons - Medtronic Twin Cities marathon

You bet you can run marathons post op! Notice I didn't say marathon. Once you've run one, more will be in your future! I was a Medtronic Global Hero in 2007. I would whole heartedly urge you to go for it! The weekend is absolutley outstanding there. You are treated like royalty. No, you...

First attempt at running since surgery

I'd say you are doing better than normal for recovery runs. This is not like taking a month off of running; it's like starting fresh having NEVER run. Start back slow. One day of overdoing it, and it sets you back several days. I found my improvement was not linear....I would level off for...

Cardiac Therapy a waste of time.

MAybe you did not need rehab, I didn't go, but I was running 3 miles at 5 weeks post op. Please don't wean yourself off BB's without discussions with your cardiologist, but get off of them as soon as you can.

Exercise and Sternum Healing - Mixed Messages from Cardio and Surgeon

So, a few different answers. Cardio workout: 6-8 weeks you should be able to get back to running, etc. My cardio let me run at 4 weeks, my surgeon said 6 weeks so I split the difference at 5! Heavier upper body lifting, you might want to wait a bit more, and start easy. My comparison is this...

    10 miler

Nice! Get out the training log and onward!

    Sex after surgery

Oh boy, I get to be the first to answer. About 3-4 weeks, but I stayed on the bottom for a few weeks to limit the weight I placed on my on my chest and arms. But I "wanted some" soner than that! :-)

Well, finally...joined the gym and actually going...

Wel, the old adage is if you workout 30 days it becomes a habit....another few months after that it will become the addiction! Good luck!

Well, finally...joined the gym and actually going...

As you get going in your workouts, make sure to mix it up...longer one day, shorter the next, etc. also, a goal race or walk is really good to have.......

Well, finally...joined the gym and actually going...

You are doing really well, especially with the meds you are taking. When you talk with your cardio, discuss WHY your are on them, and what it will take to get off of them. Let your cardio know you want to work out, get in better shape, and have them help you in that effort. If at any time you...

Carvedilol and Heart Rate / Biking, jogging

Ace inhibitors(like lisinopril) are ok, they keep blood vessla open, and don't allow them to constrict which keeps the bp lower...just watch out if you dehydrate. I get very light headed because of them. If you need BB's them fine, but getcthenlowest dose possible. I got off mine at about 4...

    On-X and Activity

Although not on Coumadin, I agree with everyone else, it is not a factor in your running...cardiac athletes has many members on coumadin and run marathons and ironmans. And Gymguy, you got my attention with an outdoor "jog" at 10-12 mph! Then I read more and figured you meant 10-12 minute...

Carvedilol and Heart Rate / Biking, jogging

Yup, those BB's will stop you! I would make an effort to get off them if medically possible. There are much better drugs to treat hypertension, especially for athletes. Work with your doctor to see if and when you can drop them.......you will see the difference quickly. ALso, do not juts...

Another new member gettin' ready for AVR

Welcome, but sorry for the reason you are joining us. I have an Edwards valve, 5 years now. Mi have posted quite a bit about them, but to summarize: they are hand sewn from the pericardial sac of the cow, they are not the actual aortic valve, like a pig valve is. They have the latest tissue...
