I am a marathon runner with a broken heart

Rubi you are clearly having symptoms and it's time to get the valve fixed! My advice to you is to ask your cardiologist and surgeon what they think is best, and get this operation done. OHS is absolutely NOT a death sentence, but your current situation is - you are fit and you will be fine...

Well. . . It has happened again.

Ahh Steve . . . how ridiculously (and delightfully) boring! Long may we continue to be completely uninteresting to our doctors! :-)

Help! My 2nd artificial valve seems to be letting me down - now what?

Charlotte there are several people on here who have had three AVRs and no doubt they will speak up. I've had two within the space of one year, Anthony had two within the space of three months . . . and to be honest, NOT having another AVR isn't an option for you (if you want to live, that is!)...

New to the forum...DH scheduled for OHS in 4 days (long...get a snack)

Yikes, good luck to both of you for this week. This is no doubt harder on you than it is on him, so take care of yourself too! Let us know how it goes. :-)

    Alcohol and Warfarin

I also wash my warfarin down with wine about once a week. What does this say about Aussies?? Haven't died from a stroke or a bleed yet.

Smashing it Helen!! Great to hear. :-)

1st travel time to Houston, tx

If it helps - when no-one is chasing you down the halls after your tests, waving your results at you, that generally means that nothing is seriously wrong. Doctors and hospitals are constantly in triage mode so anything non-urgent gets pushed aside for urgent things. As frustrating as it may...

    Medical alert IDs

"So... I haven't seen ANY discussion on the site about people wearing Medical IDs or what's being put on them." Linda, there has been at least two threads on this topic in the past year that I can remember, with opinion being about equally split between 'it doesn't matter' and 'I won't leave...

Anyone getting ready to partake in any sporting events anytime soon?

"Realistically can you run a 5K within 12 weeks from surgery." IMHO - no. And it's nothing to do with your heart, which may (or may not) come to the party, it's your sternum. The jarring caused by running is very painful - I tried to jog at about six weeks and made it about 50m. Ouch. BTW I...

12 weeks Post Op Blog post

Great to hear Anthony! Especially the bit about those rubbish restrictions on exercise you were given before. :-) Keep smashing it (not literally of course). And joan - at 12 weeks post op you have NO lifting restrictions, so there is no reason you can't get back to work and lift stuff...

    High pulse post surgery....

TG my first op I got a tissue valve for the same reasons as you - mainly, I expected to hurt myself in various sports!! 10.5 months later I got acute endocarditis which did so much damage that I was told it was mech this time as there was no way anyone would be able to do a third op in there...

    High pulse post surgery....

My RHR was also high after surgery, but got back down to the mid-50s within 4-6 months. Elevated HR after heart surgery seems to happen to everyone so don't worry about it! I'm not sure I was particularly good about 'easing' back into training after each of my surgeries, but your body will...

Valve Selection / Pre-Surgery / Post Surgery forums in one thread

You have a low tolerance for pain, yet you're training for an Ironman? Well, as they say: toughen up princess! Post-op pain for most of us is nowhere near as painful as running the second half of a marathon with a blister, after 112 miles on a bike seat. And to continue on the tough love that...

Effects of High Altitudes post-op (contemplating Mauna Kea trip)

Yep, the driving bit was duly noted, slacker. ;-) Hehehehehe . . . .

from one BP extreme to the other

Keep in mind that none of us here are doctors . . . but your little heart has been through the wars in the past couple of weeks and needs time to adjust!! Feeling just 'a tad off' sounds like a huge improvement actually! :-) Make sure to eat good quality food, do your walking, rest, and if...

Effects of High Altitudes post-op (contemplating Mauna Kea trip)

I've never been told to stay away from altitude, pre-op or post-op. And now that you're *fixed* I can't see any reasons why you shouldn't be able to drive up MK. You're the same as someone born with a normal heart now, only fitter!! Enjoy :-)

I'm back ... but for other reasons

Bloody hell Allison that is a terrible thing to go through. HOWEVER you've gone through the worst of it and it HAS to get better. Sending hugs your way, you deserve much better.

    Mechanical valve and heart rate

I can't get my HR over 150! Very rarely it touches 160, but usually I'm gasping for air in the 140s. Still trying to figure that one out. My resting HR is in the low 50s though so the exercise physios think 150 is just fine as a max HR. Once you have clearance from your doctors, you have no...

    Post-op Question?

My apartment is at the top of 30 stairs and I managed fine, although I stopped 1-2 times in the first week or so. I think having to walk up the stairs was probably good for my recovery!! IMHO you should try to be 'normal' as soon as you can, it helps with your recovery (mental) when you don't...
