Two days to go; lot's of anxiety. Is this pretty normal?

I was very scared. But I made peace with my maker and was comfortable with what He had planned for me. I went in knowing that they rarely, rarely, loose anyone for this type of surgery. Once you get on the bed, they will make you comfortable, if they don't ask for something. Good luck and fast...

    Cardiac rehab?

My opinion, I recommend rehab. For me it gave me confidence as I progressed. I had an incidence that put me in the ER during rehab. It was due to the blood pressure meds I was on. After exercise, it lowered my heart rate and BP that I almost passed out. I had to see the cardiologist before I...

    might need heart surgery

No harm in getting a second opinion. It is major surgery. Look up top docs in your area. Just my opinion.

    Work Release

I was given 12 weeks, but I could have went back in 8. I wanted to take full advantage of recovery and rehab. I was glad I waited because I did end up having an issue in rehab. Because of the blood pressure medicine they had me on after surgery, it caused it to go too low after exercise and I...

Bicuspid Valve Questions for Cardio......Need Help

I wonder about your symptoms. Do you have any? At a 1.0 opening, I would think that you do have some symptoms, you may not realize it. I was told it is better to take care of these valves earlier rather than later to avoid any other problems developing with your heart. I was told your prognosis...

Surgery duration and average time on the Pump for a straight AVR?

I think I went into surgery around 8-8:30am, was waking up around 1pm. My total time on bypass was 123 minutes. Aorta was crossclamped for a total of 98 minutes. Minimally invasive surgery. Only AVR, no other problems. Was in hospital for 4 full days. Could have returned to work (lab tech)...

Diagnosed with a Bicuspid Valve....need opinions.

It is important to be proactive. It is your life and if you feel the need to call the doctors, do it. Time waits for no man. I too have kids, three of them, all home. And everyone here completely understands how scary it is. The worst part is what you are going through now and the wait for the...

Diagnosed with a Bicuspid Valve....need opinions.

I know my symptoms seemed to get worse once I was told I may need surgery. You do have to get yourself educated and this is a great place. At 1.0 opening you are probably in need. In my case, I was at or less than 1.0 and they wanted to replace the valve early while my heart was healthy. In my...

Holy Crap - Surgery on 3 valves!

I am not sure but the aortic valve is either a bicuspid or a tricuspid valve. He may be talking about the same valve. Hopefully everything turns out ok. Praying for you.

Intro and First post-op Century Ride

Congratulations on your first century. I love to ride but can't do any where near your numbers and I consider myself in good shape. I just completed my first 1/4 century (25miles) yesterday and it took me two hours, which is enough for me. I can't imagine being in the saddle over 5 hours...

Do you have a tissue valve?

To start01, There is no limit and I can say I exercise at 100% of my heart rate. That is 160bpm, and it has come down from 165-166bpm as I get in better shape. I am around 182 lbs, and I am benching 190, running 7 miles a week and biking 15 miles a week, weather on a tread mill or on the road. I...

Hi- another (active) BAV guy here

Just want to share my story with you. I started exercising, lifting heavy weight, runnng 5K's and biking, when I turned 40 in 1997 when my youngest son was born. I wanted to stay in shape when he was older so I could "keep up" with him. Not only that, seeing family members die from heart disease...

Do you have a tissue valve?

I had AVR 10/24/2012 with a tissue valve @ 55 years old. Just curious to hear from fellow tissue valves and if you know tissue valve recipients how long you have had your valve and how old you were. I know I will probably need to get mine replaced some day. Survival rates say that people with...

Still on chair in corner of waiting room.

I, as well as everybody on this site, understand your frustration. It is important to get checked, and to stay educated, and have a few opinions. It is all up to you as to what you ultimately want to do. I will say that you may want to consider your loved ones though and how their lives would be...

    which valve???????

I had my AVR last year at 55 years old with a tissue valve. I asked doctors what valve they would want and all said tissue because of the anticuagulation therapy (warfarin). They can't say how long your valve will last even if it is a mechanical valve. I wanted to live my life without the...

    Surgery Date is set

The carotid artery is another spot for a possible blockage. I would assume they want to make sure it is also clear. I know they put a special IV line in my neck for quick access for medications. You won't even know it is there. Good luck!
