Cleared to Run 15 Days Post Op!!!

Definitely easing into it. I'll do a majority of walking the next few weeks and very gradually pick up the running. I credit the quick return in large part to the fact that my incision was a right anterior minithoracotomy and not a mini-sternotomy (i.e. no broken bones for an AVR).

Cleared to Run 15 Days Post Op!!!

I had my follow up with the surgeon yesterday. He said everything went exactly the way it was supposed to. He said "you can start running, just don't go crazy and ease into it." So I did 5 miles of walk 4 minutes/run 1 minute. According to the Garmin GPS that amounted to 1.4 miles of running...

Newbie here; I need advice... would I be out of line in asking for a second opinion?

Be sure you find a cardiologist who reads the echo films himself and doesn't just rely on the written report. It can make a huge difference!

One thing I've yet to do....

There is one thing I still haven't done since surgery last Tuesday. Hopefully mirilax will be "productive."

    Day 5 update

Definitely a tired day today. Just wrapped up a nice 90 minute nap on the couch...

    Day 5 update

You are definitely a benchmark for a good recovery! Competition definitely makes everyone better so I'll take you up on that.

    Day 5 update

I credit a lot of this to having the replacement done via right mini thoracotomy and not a sternal incision.

    Day 5 update

Post mechanical AVR... Slept a solid 7 hours last night which was my first night at home. Only woke up to go to the bathroom. Went for a 1.25 mile walk and could have kept going. Ate a great breakfast fixed by my awesome wife. (she is doing great with the whole thing). We are doing another...

Bill, you definitely win! I do have back pain but it's nothing lortab won't fix. My stamina and endurance is what has really bounced back.

    Last Race Before Surgery

I had a mechanical AVR on Tuesday. It's now Friday evening and I'm nearly pain free, eating full meals and back to work (albeit from the hospital bed). I think the biggest difference lies in the fact that I had a right anterior thoracotomy instead of a mini-strernotomy. Dr. Clifton Lewis here in...

    AVR Surgery Tomorrow Morning!

AVR set for tomorrow morning at St.,Vincent's here in Birmingham, AL by Dr. Clifton Lewis. I keep having to ask myself "why am I doing this?". Then I go through the thought process all over again and arrive at the same conclusion. I'm going mechanical and have the usual concerns: ticking? Will I...

    Long distance running and coumadin

Wow, this thread got way off-topic!

    Last Race Before Surgery

Thanks to everyone... I knew I had a PB in that last race, primarily because it had been a while since I did a simple 5K. We are definitely taking the "fix it before symptoms" approach. However, ever since we made the decision, I keep thinking I'm getting some symptoms. It's probably just my...

    Surgery set for May 8

Thanks to all. I ran a short race on Friday (5K) and set a personal best of 22:47 (=7:21/mile) so I'm in pretty good shape. I'm hopeful that replacing this leaky valve will actually help my running in the long run, but recovery will obviously take some time and I have no expectations...

    Last Race Before Surgery

22:47 = 7:21 pace. My wife and I did another 5 miles after the race. I wish I was up to 50 mile weeks BC! I did a 1/2 in February and PB'ed it at 1:47. I'm going with the ATS mechanical valve. While I'm worried about the affect on running performance, I don't want another surgery. I'm...

    Last Race Before Surgery

Thanks, Jack. No such restrictions from my cardiologist thankfully. Did you have stenosis or insufficiency?
