    Ross vs Mechanical

I’m 33 and going mechanical. Personally, I wouldn’t do a Ross unless I was 70. Arnold Schwarzenegger had a Ross at 50. It lasted 20 years and he’s had 2 more heart surgeries since then. I believe he now has a mechanical. For me I was more worried about surgery than I was about taking warfarin.

    Surgery in 2 weeks

Good luck! We’ll be recovering around the same time. Mine is on Tuesday

    Surgery scheduled in two weeks

My tinnitus is pretty quiet so my thoughts are the ticking will be louder. But who knows? Good luck with the surgery! Have you decided on a valve yet?

T minus less than 24 hours!

I was literally debating reading dune in recover. I think this is my sign.

    Surgery scheduled in two weeks

Finally scheduled for surgery in two weeks! Excited to get through everything. Ready to take on the world. I’m feeling very optimistic. I’m oddly kind of excited for the ticking of the mechanical valve. I think it’ll be comforting as well as a good distraction from my tinnitus. Anyway thanks...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

There’s not really stats on his AA He says that he’s been performing a lot of AA surgeries lately and he seems confident that my survival rate wouldn’t be much lower than doing the valve alone. I called him today and he said he’d repair my aorta if he thinks the walls look thin.

60YO woman with BAV and severe stenosis

It’s subtle at first. I thought that I hadn’t been working out as much as I should’ve been at first. If you’re active and you notice you’re more tired than normal. Then that’s your answer. Your symptoms can progress fast too. My tiredness was barely noticeable at first, but now I sometimes...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

Yup I understand, problem is no hospital in my state does a high amount of AA replacement. At least not the numbers associated with lower mortality. The surgeon I’m seeing is in the top 2 or 3 for most valve replacements surgeries in my state. I’m thinking maybe just asking him to evaluate my...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

Sorry, major hospitals like that are out of network and in different states so I was assuming I’d just have a call with them. Yes, that’s what I was curious about. Is that in network? I’d love to have Sinai look at my echo, but if it’s expensive then I’d rather just stay in network. Thanks for...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

Fair enough! I appreciate you answering all my questions, but yes I was hoping for a one and done, but it seems like that’s not gonna be the case for me. I’m 33, sorry! I’ve been posting all over the place, I can’t remember where I’ve posted my measurements and age. Thanks again everyone for...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

@pellicle Thanks for the feedback! You bring up some interesting points, I’d be curious to see if older patients progressed slower or faster than younger patients. My root is “normal”, I wish I had the exact measurements, but last time they checked it was 31mm. My mid ascending dilation is...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

If my insurance won’t cover those calls will it be expensive? I ready online $1,800, but how accurate is that?

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

I did schedule a second opinion with a highly rated surgeon in my state, but he’s a month out. Not sure I’m willing to wait that long for surgery. I did get on his appointment cancellation list. Maybe I’ll try to get an appointment with mayo as well as Cleveland. I don’t think I’ll go out of...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

It’s good! I’d say it doesn’t contradict any of the other research I’ve seen, but it does make your decision harder, but I want to see what you think about that research. So this first one has a really interesting premise in the introduction. Basically they’re calling in to question previous...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

Where would you suggest doing something like this? Would 23 and me be a good option? Preferably something fast. Doctor said I should get surgery soon. So I was reading research that theorized people with BAV will continue dilating after surgery because there’s structural issues in their aorta...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

More of a small state than a small town. None of our hospitals are really considered top tier for heart surgery. I’m meeting with another surgeon, hopefully soon. I’m getting anxious about not getting my surgery asap. I sent my current surgeon some more questions. I wouldn’t mind him doing it...

33yo with BAV and severe stenosis

Thanks for the feedback! Here’s my aorta history: 2020 MRA: Normal caliber aorta extending from the aortic root to the bifurcation 2020 echo: The aortic root is normal measuring at 2.7cm 2020 stress echo: no aorta data 2021: No data 2022 stress echo: The aortic root size is normal measuring...

33yo with BAV and severe stenosis

I created another thread here, but I thought I’d also ask for advice in this one. I talked with my surgeon and he doesn’t recommend replacing my aorta at 4cm. Would you guys agree? I did hear that insurance won’t cover the replacement before 5cm which sucks so bad. I don’t think I can afford it...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

Yes I have a bicuspid valve. I heard that insurance won’t cover an aorta replacement unless it’s above 5cm. Which means I won’t be able to afford it if that’s true. I saw this study https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S000291492030535X#sec0004 It says there’s no difference in...

Should I push to replace my mid ascending aorta?

Thanks for the reply! I’m 33 years old I have no idea if they’re experienced in aortic aneurysms. On us news it says my hospital is average as far as heart surgery goes. I live in a small state. So not a ton of surgery volume. My cardiologist says my surgeon is the best in the state in his...
