    Worried sick

Seems to me like it's time for a 2nd opinion.

So scared and feel so alone

Generally surgery is advised when the risks of the surgery are less than the risks of the condition. If you lie to your Dr, then you could be increasing your risk. If you don't trust your Dr. you can always get a 2nd opinion, but putting off needed surgery only adds to your risks. I agree...

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your recovery!

AVS and Lp(a) -- how well known?

Seems to me it's a good thing that you found out about the elevated levels of LP(a) since it is a risk factor for a lot more than AVS, and it is treatable. I'm not up on the muppets. In reading up about LP(a), while drinking red wine I am comforted by what I found on Wikipedia: Some studies...

What is Life Like After OHS?

After several months for recovery, my life has been pretty much the same as it was before. I do spend more time doing what I and my wife really want to do. Nothing like finding out you have a heart defect and an aortic aneurysm to make you realize that we only have so much time here.

    New guy

Welcome to the forum. While it is worthwhile to do your research and get informed on your condition, possible options should your condition worsen, or even a 2nd opinion to confirm the current state of your valve, it seems to me you are getting ahead of yourself. Your Dr. said your valve could...

    Post Surgery Quality of Life

I am very active so when I was diagnosed with BAV and an aortic aneurysm I did some research on the risks of exercising post aneurysm. I posted what I found with some quotes from some prominent Dr's on this subject here...

Indications for AVR for chronic severe Aortic Regurgitation

I've learned trying to make sense of all the information from the echo can be futile. It's important to have a good Cardiologist to evaluate your specific situation. If you have any doubts, find another good Dr. and get a 2nd opinion. Ask your Dr. what the measurements mean, whether your...

    Bypass Brain

I'm probably very lucky not to have suffered pumphead, my short term memory was pretty bad to begin with. I do get migraine aura's, maybe once a month or so, that I did not get before. I can also feel my heart pounding when I take a deep breath, or bend backwards - this was strange at first...

    Echo results

The advice is spot on. I was concerned with the numbers on my echo but my Cardio told me that my heart was performing better than the numbers imply. I thought perhaps he was being optimistic so I got a second opinion, and that Dr told me the exact same thing. I mentioned this to the tech on...

Looking for words of support (new post)

Well we are all going to die someday, and those of us with heart issues probably think about this more than most. I had cancer and open heart surgery in the same year. Both were a total shock to me, so now I know there could be another surprise around the corner and Dr's don't always give good...

    Second opinions

Fyi, I've given up trying to make sense of the numbers since both opinions told me my heart is working better than the numbers imply.  Now I look for words like trivial, mild , moderate, and severe.  I don't worry about trivial or mild and a condition can be moderate a long time before...

    Second opinions

I got a second opinion and made no secrets about it. I had the results of my echo sent from the 1st Dr. to the 2nd, and even mentioned to the original Dr. that the 2nd Dr confirmed what he said.

    Push ups?

It's not the wires themselves that hurt, maybe the muscles around them? Using them in a new way may be the issue, so perhaps if you wanted to keep trying you would build up a tolerance to it. Perhaps not but you should try to do what you want to do.

aortic aneurysm repair and stroke prevention?

I had not heard he died, he was a good actor and appeared in so many good movies. Very sad. As was already stated, the odds of fatal complications are low, 1-2% for healthy people, but there are risks with any surgery. While some Dr's/hospitals definitely have lower rates of complications than...

    Post surgery Depression

All I can suggest is to try to focus on the positives. Try to spend your time doing the things that you enjoy and value ... and take your dog for a walk. Best wishes.

First surgery, bicuspid aortic valve replacement

Surprisingly, surgeons often ask patients to make the valve choice, mine did. Basically with mechanical valves you have a very small but constant risk of an event (bleeding or stroke) which can be mitigated significantly by self testing and management of your INR ratio. With a tissue valve you...

I know there are some brainy people who can help me with the technical stuff...

I normally try to understand reports myself but I've given up on the echo, here's why: I had my bicuspid aortic valve spared during surgery to repair my ascending aorta and root, because it was not leaking. After the surgery it started leaking, progressing from mild to moderate rather quickly...

    Recovery Trajectory Question

To the original question ... generally at 2.5 to 3 months you are given the green light to do what you want. Full recovery is generally considered to be 6 months to a year. I was swimming before 3 months but I took it easy for a long time and would say it was well over a year, maybe 2, before...

    Seeing another cardiology

So you don't need surgery yet but they would do it now as part of a study? That doesn't make sense to me, for you or for the study. While I am grateful to those that participate in studies, advancing the science, I would think a study such as this carries some risk over and above conventional...
