    Do I need it?

We have bedrooms and a bath on both floors and my wife had both areas ready for me when I came home. The hosptial would not let me leave until I did my walks and did a few flights of stairs. I was out in 4 days. When I got home I found the recliner, which we already had, did not work well. As...

    what companies supply test strips?

Not sure if this helps, but my doctor put me in this companies program. http://www.myphm.com/ I do test and email or call them with results and they contact my docs office who then call me with any adjustments. Just started 3 months ago and my insurance originally said my cost would be either...

Hubby (bbuck) surgery done and successful

Funny, but that was my biggest issue the first night. I kept sliding down and on at least 3 occasions 2 nurses had to come in and lift me up by sheets and pull me up. I think it was once the drain tubes were out, I could move around better. Happy to hear it went well.

    Roche sucks

I was also told the 3 month rule and had to wait for mine. Which meant I had to go to hospital each week for blood draw as I was bouncing around alot on my INR. Still high but hoping to get it down.

    Last Race Before Surgery

I am a biker. I had surgery late October last year and completed 100 mile Centuries in June and August doing about 3500 milee last year. I was doing my nightly 20 mile bike rides right up to the end including the night before surgery. I think it helped my recovery as I bounced back pretty quickly.

Chest tube hole not closing up

I was another who did not have stitches to close the holes. As they pulled the tubes, another nurse put a big bandage over the area of the holes. Two days later just before I left hosptial, they took bandage off and I took a shower. They gave me iodine swabs and told me to swab 2 times a day...

My doc also told me on first appointment after surgery that he can still often hear a murmur after surgery. Not sure if it is the same as a woosh.

    Mini Thoracotomy v. Mini Sternotomy

I went into surgery with the doctor saying he felt he could do a mini stenotomy. When I woke up he said when they got in they found the heart was larger than they thought and he ended up doing a full. He felt it was safer and I felt since he was doing it, I trusted him to do right thing. He said...

Which test is most crucial to decide about AVR ?

I Had no symptoms, but doc heard murmur. So for year and a half I went in for echos and Ct Scans which were used I think because they were looking at artery for increase in size. They then did an angiogram and doc came in and said it showed the valve was not closing all of the way and it was...

    Pericardial effusion

It is common and from what I have read is usually a result from the bodys reaction to the surgery. Small amounts of fluid can build up and in most cases can be taken care of with anti-inflamatory like tylenol. In very extreme cases surgery may be necessary, which In my case I ended up doing. Was...

Need info asap waiting on dr call ? Hiatal hernia complications?

I am interested to see how this turns out for you. I had the tamponade in January and they did a pericardial Window, IE; an opening in pericardal so fluid does not accumulate. My stomache has been a little distended the last few weeks. I had low red blood cells, but last test a few weeks ago...

    Rough past couple of days

I am almost five months out. Based on what you are saying, I think a visit to the doctor may be in order to rule out any issues. Have you checked your temperature? Also are you checking your weight each day to see if any sudden increase. Many factors and may just be your body saying slow down to...

    Thinking about At Home Testing

I just got one 3 weeks ago. In my case my cardiologist has a coumadin clinic that I deal with after each test. They work with a company called Patient Home Monitoring, http://phmhometesting.com/. I called them and they contacted my insurance company to set everything up. With the insurance I had...

Secrets to cleaning the incision: untold stories!

When I left hospital I was given 6 bars of Dial Soap and told only to use it and then to wash from the top down with a wash clothe and then not use wash clothe on anything else until it was cleaned. I was also given a large bag of betadine swabs and told to apply twice a day over the incision...

Hi Ovie, I went to cardioligist for 3 month post surgery visit this week and he told me I could go back to doing everything I was doing before surgery including biking. He said just be carefull. So with a mechanical valve I am not sure what you mean by limitations.

    Laying flat at night

I cannot sleep on my back. First night even with the drain tubes in I was able to sleep a little on my left side with a pillow there. I did ask the doctor and he told me I could sleep on my side as long as I did not bring one shoulder past the other shoulder. So, no more than 90 degrees? He...
