    Beta blockers

That is fantastic Anne! Did he talk about coming off of them slowly decreasing the dosing, or to just stop them? Cheers, Rob

    Aortic Dissection question

I had a severe aortic dissection back in 2003. The short answer is as SuperBob said, Yes, they can happen again. The main thing that can be done by our doctors today is to redirect the main aortic blood flow away from the false lumen, and back into the main channel. They must still allow blood...

    ON-X Valve?

Well, my surgeon was old, and he was a solid St Judes guy. He advised strongly that I go with the On-X. The On-X valve did not have the graft option,(not called a stent) when my second surgery was done 4 years ago, so my surgeon built his own graft for my valve. The On-X valve with graft was...

    ON-X Valve?

In my case, I originally had a St. Judes mech aortic valve for 10 yrs. But, panus tissue developed around the valve opening and was preventing it from functioning. I had to have another surgery to replace it. Since the On-X was designed differently, and had a deflective design to deflect and...

Did You Travel For Your Surgery?

Well, The only additional costs to me was the hotel room for my wife and our airfare. As far the hospital costs were concerned, there was no difference in price for the surgery.

Did You Travel For Your Surgery?

I traveled to the Cleveland Clinic for my surgery. It was a very complex surgery, and I selected them based on their outstanding facility and staff. Due to the nature of my surgery I was in hospital for 30 days. My wife was with me the whole time, and several close friends also came up for a...

    ON-X Valve?

I have my On-X aortic valve for going on 4 years now. The main reason for my choice of this valve was that it is designed to help prevent/deflect panus development around the valve.

    Brain mri

I believe that it is more concern of what the valve is made of since MRI rely on magnetic imaging. Most heart valve manufacturers indicate if their valve is safe for MRI's.

End of March traveling to the US for my OHS

Thanks, yes the 2nd valve redo was more complex, but all and all, I am doing ok! My first valve replacement went real easy, I was only in hospital for 6 days, and then after 6 weeks, was in Hawaii for 2 weeks on holiday!

End of March traveling to the US for my OHS

My surgeon was also Dr. Gosta Petterson, and Dr. Roselli. Dr. Petterson is one of the best, you are truly in good hands! My surgery was very complex, it was a valve replacement redo, plus with both an aortic dissection and an aneurysm. I was in hospital for 30 days, and then it took several...

    Beta blockers and exercise

Hi Anne, I also take 100 mg of Atenolol, a BB, a day, and still work out. I do build muscle. bpm I do not feel matters to much in building up muscle. Increased bpm will increase your heart rate as well as "burn" more calories. Great if you are trying to lose weight by walking, jogging, or...

End of March traveling to the US for my OHS

I had my redo done at the Cleveland Clinic, They were great! They do so many heart surgeries there, that they have seen and dealt with most every situation. My plan prior to the surgery was to be as healthy as possible to help me get through it, and to seek out the best doctors and facility to...

Surgery - What Day of the Week is Best?

Hmmmm.... You may want to first check to see if your surgeon is Irish. March 17th and March 18th could be dangerous if he has too much green beer!

    Colonoscopy and warfarin

When I had mine done, I was switched off Coumadin, and had to take Heparin for several days prior, and several days after. The concern was the possibility of an accidental scrape by the scope while working it's way along, or if they did find a polyp that had to be snipped off and removed. I...

    Aortic valve and tissue growth

I had panus tissue develop around my St Jude mechanical valve after having it for 10 yrs. It had to be replaced, or they gave me at most 6 months to live, as it was so advanced, yet I was asymptomatic. I forget my exact numbers, but they were not good. So, I had all my pre-surgery tests done...

first post: want to wait little longer!

Hi Keith, In my case, I was told that I needed surgery or I would not be alive in 4 to 6 months. I was asymptomatic, "very asymptomatic", I had a StressEcho Test, and lasted on the treadmill for 13min, 23 sec. The only reason I had to stop was because by that time, the treadmill was going too...

    On-X CE-mark and (unfortunately) 1.5

I have an On-X aortic valve, and I look at it this way. I shall take a wait and see attitude on this lower INR approval data above. I have had a mechanical aortic valve since March of 2000, and feel very comfortable managing my INR between 2.5 and 3.5 There have been no issues to date...

    Question for men. Awkward..

I've had 2 major open heart surgeries, with having no issues in that department after surgery. So, what kind of drugs are you taking? Why wouldn't you discuss this with your doctor, especially if it could mean only a change to your meds could improve your issue? And if all else fails, have...
