What have you been doing lately?

Hi all, got asked to share here. 32 NB, 2.5 year post aortic valve replacement. On-X mechanical valve, and aortic aneurysm repair. Things have overall been going really well for me, aside from a couple of incidents related to the blood thinners. Was hospitalized with a GI bleed after vomiting...

My experience with AVR and follow up 3 weeks post surgery

Update time, spent the weekend in the ICU. I started cardiac rehab last Wednesday and everything seemed to be going great. They limited my activity to keep my heart rate under control, and I did my absolute best to comply. During the second session last Friday, things started off normal, but...

    Drinking alcohol on warfarin

Perhaps I gave the wrong impression, since two people seemed concerned with my "getting hammered" statement. I definitely do not condone getting irresponsibly drunk in any way, and definitely not in public. I've made those mistakes, learned from them, and I'm done. I merely meant that I will...

    Drinking alcohol on warfarin

I'm 29 so I know how you feel. My surgeon told me that there are no restrictions with alcohol while on warfarin outside of normal "don't overdo it" recommendations. When I asked her about the safety of going outside of "recommendations" maybe once or twice a week she said, "Well... as a doctor I...

    Cough

Out of curiosity, how many of you that have a cough are on Cozaar and/or Lopressor for blood pressure? I was told today by my RN that a cough is a common symptom of those medications.

My experience with AVR and follow up 3 weeks post surgery

Wowzers that looks painful! I think I'm in the clear as far as infections go, all of my wounds are closed up at this point, fingers crossed. Actually just went off my beta-blocker today, so hopefully that all goes well. Thanks for your support everyone.

My experience with AVR and follow up 3 weeks post surgery

Hi again, So it's been just over three weeks since my AVR and aneurysm surgery. I posted a pre-surgery thread about five weeks ago Two Weeks Remain, so I thought I'd follow up with you guys. As a warning I'm not going to sugarcoat anything, this whole thing was much rougher than I was led to...

    Cough

I have some coughing issues post AVR. I can barely drink water without coughing for some reason. I've learned that if you tilt your head down to swallow it's easier. It's gotten much better over the last couple of weeks, but still is a daily issue. Hurts like hell!

    Warfarin causes dementia?

I see, thanks for taking the time to explain that. I recently got thrust into the middle of all of this, and navigating the mountain of information/misinformation has been hard. I've been a little defensive lately.

    Warfarin causes dementia?

But can you see how anecdotal evidence could confuse the cause of say, hair loss? Just because you happen to started taking warfarin at the same time your hair started falling out, doesn't make them necessarily related to one another. This highlights the importance of controlled clinical trials...

    Warfarin causes dementia?

Can you provide citations for any of this? As far as I can tell, these are all symptoms of getting older, which would definitely coincide with needing a valve surgery. I have not been able to find anything relating warfarin to pretty much anything you listed above.

    Two Weeks Remain

Hi, I'm not sure I'm going to have anything new to say, gauging from many of the posts on this forum it looks like many of you are in the same boat as me! But I just thought I would say hello and share my story, since I'll likely be hanging out around here now that it's my turn to get my valve...
