    33 years since #1!

Now that you mention it I could have sworn right b4 the anesthesia kicked in I heard my surgeon say to his team "We can rebuild him".

Sweet 16 for Bovine Aortic Valve

Love the comment about the "lifetime warranty".

Recently told I need valve replacement but may not be able to take warfarin

The talk above about the logical conundrum reminded me of this favorite scene from Star Trek that I first saw as a kid and never 4got..

    Coagucheck machine life

In my experience Duracell have taken a huge quality hit. Always thought they were great but in recent years they've fouled up multiple devices I've had - flashlights, remotes, everything I used them for, with leakage in a year or less. I will never buy a Duracell product ever again. I...

From possible to confirmed BAV and all that is to come

Regarding the sound/noise of mechanical valves, despite having tinnitus I have very sensitive hearing (I had to remove a wall clock from my bedroom which was like 20 feet away from my bed, because the "click" it made with the second hand was annoying me). And when I was in the hospital...

    Aortic Valve Repair

Have no advice per se other than to give it time. I had a similar experience with my heart attack/double bypass/AVR. All the food in the hospital during my recovery had a weird taste to it, thought it was just THAT food (even called the kitchen and asked why everything had this bizarre taste...

    Natto and INR

True but I suspect maybe it was the infection that was causing his tissue to swell (with all the bugs and immune system junk that piles up when your body fights that) thus the antibiotic killed the bugs such that the swelling due to the infection cleared up as he healed.

Saying hi - 41 year old with BAV and surgery "soon"

Interesting about the size comment there. I am kind of small in stature (not a midget by any means, about 5'8 or so) but get told things like "your mouth is really small" (by my dental hygenist) and I actually have to buy kid sized eyeglass frames of like 48/16 since adult ones hang off the...

Need your opinion on these echo results... not trusting my doc.

I realize I am late to the party and this probably has no bearing but based on my own personal past experience I would try to get another echo to confirm the original one (using a different cardiologist & different hospital.outpatient center that reads it). I had an echo with completely wrong...

Anyone beside me having issues with the Cleveland Clinic? Cancelling my surgery

That almost happened to me (perforated colon). Long story. But you're right about suing anyway in these cases. If things go wrong regardless of a waiver you (or your heirs) will win in court (or through a settlement b4 trial) anyway. My best friend was killed by an inexperienced DR doing a...

BAV facing OHS in Oct (AVR and aorta graft)

Hey you got a bargain! My hospital stay alone (b4 insurance) was $450k. And that did not include cardiologists, surgeon & staff, anesthesiologist, the ER doctors, ambulance ride, and other bills I had to wade through later which took months to go through and straighten out (some were...

I was hoping it was a typo meant to read as Indiana (rather than India!).

Anyone beside me having issues with the Cleveland Clinic? Cancelling my surgery

Terrible....gotta love the state of healthcare in this country (not!). Don't get me started. Sorry for your hassles. I've been through similar things on a much smaller scale though.

Open Heart Surgery Graduate from Iowa in the United States

Wow.. That's terrible (the infection from a cortisone shot) & shouldn't have happened in the first place (right?). Did anyone look into WHY the cortisone shot caused a staph infection? How does that even happen? Dirty needle? Contaminated product in the needle? Lack of properly cleaning...

Do you have sternum pain after open heart surgery?

Right. I just replied to Caroline to clarify that but if I saw your response first I would have needed too (doh!).

Do you have sternum pain after open heart surgery?

No luck involved. I was not allowed to drive until I think the 6th week, but was still too painful to even try..Think I did not start driving until about 7 (or even8?) weeks after surgery. And to even do that after I still really needed that pillow to lift the belt off my chest. I even needed...

Do you have sternum pain after open heart surgery?

Yes the heart pillow was VERY essential for me during recovery. Not only in the initial weeks at home but when I started driving again I couldn't do without it, to keep the safety belt off my still sensitive chest area. I even still keep it in the car and use it sometimes to keep the belt...
