    Needing advice/support.

Given his age, he doesnt have many other options other than the Ross procedure. The Ross valve is the only one that will grow with him. Any other option will not may restrict his heart development at some stage. The Ross valve (I.e. the pulmonary autograft) will grow with him. That is a huge...

Second surgery / remote second, third opinion

You are in the UK. You should check out Cleveland Clinic London. I had my surgery done there. Independent surgeons told me you get a US health care standard. I had my first surgery at Mount Sinai. Weighing all the pros and cons, I think overall the experience at Cleveland Clinic london was...

    Alternative to Warfarin

yes this is a very good point. I suspect that this is why all of the trials with warfarin alternatives have failed thus far. The drugs just arent designed for this purpose. Having said that I think doctors will try continue to try new anticoagulants on patients with mech valves just to see if...

    Hair color changed after surgery?

In my case, after both OHS my hair became thicker. I suspect more bloodflow to the right areas.

    Alternative to Warfarin

There is a lot of work going into developing new anticoagulants as patents run out. The latest in clinical trial are Factor 11 inhibitors. They basically still protect against stroke, but the occurence of bleeding is much lower. Now, these are still in clinical trials for Afib and stroke...

    Problems at Night

By the way, it is the middle of the night now in Philly, so I can see that you arent sleeping. Sorry about that. It will get a lot better once you leave hospital.

    Problems at Night

@jag004 At this point after surgery, your body is still adjusting a lot to your new valve. I also had afib at night the third night after surgery. All of a sudden there was 5 doctors and nurses in my room. Within 2 minutes I was diagnosed with Afib and then within 5 I was being injected with...

5 year ON-X low INR results

@Nesphito I think the best idea is to get a letter from your surgeon. If he says 2-3, no other health professional will say anything. Nobody goes against the surgeon. So best just to get a letter from your surgeon. BTW the ON-X data and the follow up study are pretty poor designed. There have...

    Surgery #2 in the Bookstore

@jag004 Your surgeon is absolutely right about your EF. Mechanical valves have much better hemodynamics, meaning that they are a bit closer to our native valves than bio valves. The Key for you for the EF to recover is start cardiac rehab asap and continue doing evercise vigorously ideally life...

5 year ON-X low INR results

I honestly dont think it is worth going to 1.5-2 if you compare the event rates with 2-3 in On-X and the St Jude in the prose study. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9801238/ Stroke rate 0.5%, major bleed 1% at 2.2-2.8 INR range.

    3 potential choices

I had a second sirgery after my bio valve wore out after only eight years. i dont think your heart nevessarily gets damaged from a second surgery. I am fitter than ever. But surgeries really arent fun. It can take a long time to return to what you perceive as normal. I think the mechanical...

    Weird feelings

this started to happen to me after i started exercising. But i never exercised before like I do now after syrgery 2. Long story short, i was dehyrated. My symptoms went away 90% after i started to drink water during exercise

    Warfarin Protocol Initiated!

Looking at your post again, I think the issue is that your clinician seems to think that 7mg is your maintenance dose. But how can he know that with confidence? By definition, your maintenance dose is the one that keeps your INR between 2-3. That is a different number for everybody and can also...

    Awake and recovering

CONGRATS and WELCOME TO THE OTHER SIDE. The surgeon did his job. Now comes the hard work on your part to work on your recovery, keep moving and exercise over the next year to allow your heart to recover as well as possible. Best of luck going forward.

    Warfarin Protocol Initiated!

Hi Seaton, I had very similar issues when I first started warfarin with my Anti-coag clinic in the UK. I was around 1.7 to 1.8 and they were only increasing my weekly dosage by 1mg or so (when I was taking 5mg a day or so). After four weeks of this and them wondering why we are still not...

    4th procedure

I always think in complex cases like this, it is best to go with medical advice. Of course there is a question of what happens when the TVMR wears out....

    Best mechanical valve?

@nobog My point was that the clinical results are the same. Randomised control trial says ON-X and St Jude show that clinical results are the same https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36590733/ Randomised control trial showing carbomedics, ATS and St Jude showing the same clinical results...

    Best mechanical valve?

@tjay There is four major valve manufacturers. They are all the same, but also all slightly different. 1) St Jude. This is the original bileaflet valve model, which all current ones are based on. This valve has been around since 1979, so has by far the longest history in studies. There are...
