    First Post Surgery Check Up

👍 Read the headline and thought, “Didn’t he have surgery a while ago?” First routine cardiologist check up since your surgery. I get it now. 😁 No news is good news.

First Surgery Coming Up, And Afraid

Right. If one is 70 and has 10 years left after surgery, that IS normal life expectancy on average. One cannot take that decade and say, “I’m having surgery at 17, therefore I can only expect to live to 27 because study A said ten years.” It’s just not apples to apples.

First Surgery Coming Up, And Afraid

My first surgery was 32 years ago. Last year my wife and I hiked from the south rim to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. This year my wife and I hiked from the rim to the river and back out the south rim with our five kids along. We have a century ride (100 miles) planned this fall (but...

First Surgery Coming Up, And Afraid

Keep in mind that many of us are outliers. The studies are built around patients in their 60’s and 70’s that have more typical valve calcification causing aortic stenosis. When I was 17 and had my valve replaced, I couldn’t very well connect to studies done on senior citizens and project their...

Heart valve surgery and male impotency.

Old pictures comments remind me of a vacation photo taken the summer before my surgery. The last shirtless scar free picture of me at 17 years old. Sadly, the mullet I was rocking is more embarrassing than any scar. 😂

What have you been doing lately?

@Protimenow, that sounds awful. Felt compelled to acknowledge your post in some way, but a “like” seems inappropriate. Can’t imagine the stress. Hope it all gets sorted and becomes a, “remember the year when…” event for you. Insurance can’t work out an apartment rental for you?

Heart valve surgery and male impotency.

I had my valve replaced at 17. I’ve been happily married for 23 years. We have five awesome kids. I think the plumbing was unaffected. 😂 I started dating my wife almost five years after my valve was replaced. My scars / replacement has never been anything other than an interesting part of...

Just found out I have a BAV

I’m 50 years old. Taking warfarin for over 32 of those years. Here I am this year hiking out of the Grand Canyon. I’ve been to the bottom two years in a row now. About to head to the Canadian Rockies and we have white water rafting booked. I used to do a bit of mountain biking in my 20’s...

Open Heart surgeries and Neurological problems

That’s interesting. Don’t take my memory as gospel on it either. The majority of my life now is post surgery so I could be getting my timeline’s wrong. My son, however, I know hasn’t had anything done.

Can overeating cause a rise in INR?

Was that the SwedenHaus? Or something more local? Seems like those buffet joints got real popular in the 1980’s and 1990’s. We had one called “The Royal Fork”. So bad but so awesome. Especially as a teenager when we could burn it all off just breathing. Don’t know that I could do them...

Open Heart surgeries and Neurological problems

I think aura’s are fairly common among those of us with BAV. I’ll grant that’s it’s been over 30 years and it is a data point of one, but I know I used to get them as a teenager before I ever had my valve replaced. My valve was in pretty bad shape at the time. My son gets them occasionally...

    NEWBIE: Needs advice

I can see you’re just making a funny. Mine has moved a few times since 2009. He’s in Arizona now apparently. Or Oklahoma City. Seems to be a common surgeon name. He was in Florida for a bit too. I keep ticking with no issues. I’ve never seen a ranking. How would they do that? By...

Do you forget to take your med pills?

All in good fun. I’m all for anyone doing what works for them. I more make fun of my own lack of organization than anything. 6 mg daily. I’ve been rock solid for a long time. Sometimes I’m 5 mg two days a week, so I just pick a couple non-consecutive days for fives. When I have done random...

    NEWBIE: Needs advice

Surgeons tend to go with what they can get when they need it. That’s why pharmaceutical sales and dme (durable medical equipment) sales pays so well. My neighbor does dme stuff. They use his company’s products because he gets what they need to the OR when they need it. I’m sure they’re not...

Do you forget to take your med pills?

Well, it does work for the likes of you, so there’s evidence supporting that claim. 😂 Low hanging fruit. Couldn’t resist. 😉

Do you forget to take your med pills?

Sounds like you might resent/disbelief in your heart meds so have a little willful disregard of them vs your cholesterol and anti-depressants? I do mine with the meal plan. Morning pills with my orange juice. Evening pill with water at dinner. I don’t sip my juice until I have pills to...

    NEWBIE: Needs advice

There’s also just plain analysis paralysis. Can’t / don’t want to make a decision so we keep coming up with one more question to find an answer to.
