I had the collapsed lung thing too, so I pushed through the discomfort, not pain, just shortness of breath. It took about 5 mos for the lung to come all the way back. At 6 weeks I could run about 100 yards, at 12 weeks about 1 mile and by 5 months I was running 3 miles a day again. Since I knew...
I haven't seen that in New York. There is a NY Senior Games in June at Cortland NY just south of Syracuse. The competition in track & field is way too fast for me. I did try a couple qualifiers for the Empire State Games (not just for seniors) a few years ago and never came close. I ran a 5000...
They're called silent migraines and I've had them from time to time as far back as I can remember. I never get headaches from them either and long ago, even before I knew what they were, learned to simply ignore them.
Y'know, that's sort of what I did before my OHS. I didn't know whether I'd ever be able to return to running, so I took a coaching course in order to stay close to the sport. I did coach a lot of runners for a few years in the early 90s, but gradually got my confidence back and returned to...
I was perusing running issues online and came across someone or several someones, calling themselves "The Common Sense Coach". Now, I'm not the type to make a fuss over this, but I do believe I was the first and original internet "Common Sense Coach". It was after I took a USA T&F coaching...
There are about a million different training programs online. You can follow one of those which gives you a day by day schedule for acheiving particular goals. Some want you run lots of distance, some push high intensity, but they all follow a general trend.
1) run 4-5 days a week
2) do one...
Great run. I wish I could do that pace again. I ran a 3.5 mile race Jan 1st at about 12 min/mi. It was the 25th time I ran that race and probably the slowest.
Yeah, the legs are weak. Going up stairs you're using all the largest muscles and they haven't had a good workout in many months. 3 mph in a TM doesn't do it. Give it time and they'll come around.
BTW, I'm just a few miles away in Latham. Here's my pics from the recent Schenectady...
I never knew what my max HR was before OHS, mostly because I didn't care. It was what it was and I always gauged exertion by the intensity of my breathing. Besides, there were no HRMs back then.
Many years after the valve job I did measure it a few times on a treadmill pulse meter and it...
Not bad at all from not so new runner. I couldn't match your time, especially at altitude. I ran one in Boulder once and it took me at least an extra minute.
Tell you what though. A 15k is so hard the legs are still weak 7 days later. I was hurting until Thursday and it took until Sunday to be without pain at the start of a run. The experts say to expect 1 day for each mile raced before full recovery. At 65, I'm going to add a few days to that rule...
I first ran the Schenectady, NY Stockade-athon 15K in 1978. This year was my 30th finish. 10 times before AVR, 20 after. This photo is of the runners who have finished it 30 or more times. 196 finishes total. Don't ask to total our ages. I'm 3rd from left. 2nd from left is Ed Salvo, who had AVR...
I waited the requisite 6 weeks like a good boy before running. I had been walking every day and was up to 5-6 easy miles by then. So on the day I reached 6 weeks I tried to run for the first time and only got 80 yards before gasping for breath. I had a follow-up appointment with the cardiologist...
We did OK. Team 1 ran 4:16, but I slowed them down a lot with my 12 minute miles even though I was a bit ahead of my projected time. Team 2 ran 4:20 and 6 people ran the half marathon. Mostly we had fun making or remaking acquaintances. It will be months before anyone begins planning a 2014...
In Syracuse, NY this morning heading out to run with a couple dozen other HEART team members. Some are doing the half marathon, some the 4-person relay. We have no one in the full marathon this year as in the past. This is the 8th annual gathering of cardiac runners in the Northeast.
We don't know. Only you know what you really want to do, so do it.
I've run over 300 races since AVR 22 yrs ago, no marathons and only one half-marathon. My paces are similar to yours these days, maybe even a little slower. I run races as much to socialize as to test my limits. Ran a 7 mi very...
July 26 1991, St Jude's aortic valve, at Albany, NY Medical Ctr.
And doing just fine, thank you. Within the past year, now aged 65, I ran a half marathon, swam a mile and did 500 pushups (10x50) in one session.
Oh right, I forgot about that aspect. When you do finish it, you'll be infinitely pleased with yourself. Expect an emotional rush that can bring you close to tears, but don't expect others to understand why.
