    The old members

I kind of come and go. I have also developed a low grade prostate cancer and am enrolled in an active surveillance program. I'm now a bit more occupied with prostate cancer education which is unique and confusing to say the least. Interesting, the forums dealing with that have the same...

    Time for a new Cardiologist

My cardiologist is at Emory St Joseph's which is part of the Emory system. I go see Dr. Frohwein and Dr. Spencer Palmer is also very good. I'm not sure about the main campus. Sorry for the duplicate. Can't figure out how to delete posts.

    Endocarditis

I guess getting infective endocarditis (IE) makes me the expert, and I only had a mitral valve repair. Yes taking 2000 mg amoxicillin for dental is pretty standard for me. Also, same dose for surgeries, for example, hernia in my case. Also colonoscopies. I had a strep strain F and my ID doctor...

    Hello from new member

Hello Martin, My mitral valve was a repair not even a replacement. Even lower on the totem pole.

Anyone had surgery on an irradiated heart?

Hello Anna, have you given any thought to having a right side mini-thoratocomy procedure which is less invasive than the open sternum? That's pretty common these days in the absence of other issues. Or maybe even robotic. The mitral valve seem to have more options as far as technique goes.

Atlanta Surgeons for Aortic Valve Replacement?

I try not to be a commercial for anyone but I have my preferences. I like the bigger hospitals with longer history myself. Yes I have trouble with typing responses myself.

Atlanta Surgeons for Aortic Valve Replacement?

Hello Cathy, When I had my MV repair at St. Joseph's, a fellow patient in our little group that day had an AVR by Dr. Langford. He's pretty good. Dr. Chen at Emory is very good. Dr. Murphy at Emory/St.Joseph's is also very good. Atlanta has a lot of good surgeons and several Hospitals to...

    Laughs at the TEE

The last time I had a TEE was when I developed endocarditis and had two TEE's a few days apart. The first was done by an associate since it was an emergency and the second was by my guy. The associate was more serious since we never met, but during the encounter with my regular cardiologist ...

    Surgery - June 21st @ Wellstar Kennestone

1,500 steps seems like a little less than a mile. I think that's pretty good. I remember walking maybe 30 minutes per day. I was also taking 3 hour naps the first week.

Infarct of the spleen after valve replacement

Has he been running any fevers on and off? I guess that blood tests may include a blood culture?

    Surgery - June 21st @ Wellstar Kennestone

Your results are good news. I would try to get your stuff done by Sunday or by mid day Monday. I actually worked until 2 pm the day before my surgery, so that I could start to unwind. I think just hanging out on Monday and unwinding is a good idea. Some observations. The tubes and...

When should i plan for surgery?

Pre op incentive spirometer measurement numbers

I was given a spirometer a few days before surgery to just practice. I was in the 3000's. I'll never forget this but the next day maybe 12 hours after surgery and still in ICU, the nurse gave me a spirometer to test it out. I blew a whopping 500. Her response, "that's gold". Just use it a...

Strong emotions at post operative visit

I feel indebted to my surgeon and felt the same. Sort of a funny exchange with him came about 5 years later when I developed endocarditis which accidentally caused me to have an emergency arterial thombectomy in my leg. He comes walking in my hospital room and says to me, "Hello, I don't know...

Has anyone had a 2nd mitral valve REPAIR (re-repair)?

Hello John, I had robotic MV repair in 2009 at age 47. Going on year 6, I'm at mild regurgitation. I'm told that even with any surgery to fix this, there's a good likelyhood of some continuing regurg. I think the idea that after surgery one's regurg going and staying at none is not very...
