    Alcohol pads yes or no

Husband tests regularly for glucose levels. Pretty much the same procedure I guess. He washes hands with plain water and a wee bit of Dettol liquid soap. He stabs his finger, squeezes a drop of blood out, wipes that off with a clean, plain tissue, squeezes again and uses that blood for the test...

    Post op complications

Hi Team. So back to hospital we go again. This time it’s a pulmonary embolism. They are treating it with drugs and hoping it will break up and disperse but have to wait for CT scan to see how it’s going.

    Your experience getting travel insurance?

Not sure if you can get it in Australia but here in NZ we use 1-Cover. We had no trouble getting insurance with aortic stenosis before it got to severe (we weren’t traveling then). Very easy online assessment to see if you can get it and if you have to pay a bit extra...

    Post op complications

He lost weight because he wasn’t eating! He just felt unwell and everything tasted bad. He kept saying he would feel better soon, that it was just what you have to go through. I wasn’t convinced so that’s why I rang the hospital. It was the breathlessness that concerned me rather than any...

    Post op complications

He was weighing every second day and actually lost weight. They drained about 1500 mls of fluid off. I'm not sure how much that would weigh, maybe it's 1.5kg? It certainly didn't register on the scales but I suspect that's because he wasn't eating as he didn't feel well.

    Post op complications

My husband had an AVR on the 9th July. He was discharged and we came home a week later. He was pleased to be home but gradually became more breathless and unable to complete the planned light exercise routine. He had no appetite and to put it in his words at the time “felt like ****!” Last...

After your surgery, what are some of the things that you found out that surprised you

Writing for my husband who is 10 days post op and doing well. Had the most surprising experience on Tim’s second last morning in hospital. The Ward is really busy and short-staffed. Two nurses came in and said they were going to make the bed and do anything else Tim needed. They tidied...

Thanks Pellicle. Yep and also outlawed is “just push your buzzer and a nurse will come” and “you might feel better if you eat something!” Well, on day 3 anyway 😊

Well that’s funny because I bought a sandwich today and took it back to his room as I didn’t want to eat alone. He thought it looked tasty so I gave him half. He loved it and after that he started eating what they gave him. We have been married for 40 years and every single day we have expressed...

That sounds a bit scary. I don’t know if it’s the same as Tim had yesterday. They kept talking about his sinuses and I thought that was weird as it’s his heart not his sinuses, but he is coughing up ‘stuff’ and has had some very light nosebleeds today. There’s nothing that can make me feel more...

Wow what a difference a day makes! My Tim is back and he is eating and walking and weeing and pooing! Sorry but it seems like those things are very important post op :) I managed to get Sky Live working on the tablet for him - he’s determined to watch the NZ Blackcaps thrash England in the World...

Thanks everyone. Today was not good for him. His heart rate was high this morning so they have been giving him infusions all day which made him feel so nauseated and miserable. It finally came down late afternoon and they took him off the infusion. An hour later his heart rate went too low...

Post op Day 2. Tim is still experiencing nausea and very sleepy. Was able to walk from bed to ensuite with assistance and had a shower. Said it was wonderful! He slept for two hours after though but that's ok. Tomorrow they will remove the urinary catheter - those of you who have experienced...

Phew! I am very happy to report that Tim's surgery went well yesterday. A few issues with low blood pressure meant he had to stay on the ventilator thingee till this morning but by this afternoon he was well enough to leave ICU and go back to the Ward. He is sleeping more than he is awake but...

Just an update. He is in theatre now. The surgeon is using a bovine replacement valve. Today also happens to be Appreciation of the Cow Day, so I'm told. I choosing to believe that's a good omen :)

    Bad Fatigue

My husband wakes up, has breakfast, does a few chores till about 11am, then falls asleep in his chair. I wake him about 12.30 for lunch. By 2.00pm he is asleep again. Wakes about 3.00 and does a few things. Sometimes he will last till 7.00pm before he heads to the Land of Nod again but sometime...

I don't think it's about comparing. All surgery carries risk. I wish your husband good luck and hopefully sometime soon after the 9th we will both be able to report how successful the ops have been. :)

Hi all. I live in Northland, New Zealand. My husband has aortic stenosis and is scheduled for an open heart valve replacement on 9th July. We will have to travel to Auckland for this so hoping it isn't cancelled due to incomings. I have read so many threads in these forums, joined Facebook...

    Auckland City Admissions

Finally they gave us a date! Well two dates really. Admission on the 8th and surgery on the 9th. Fingers crossed it doesn't get cancelled due to incoming emergencies - they warned us this could happen. Wow it's a bit scary really.
