    might need heart surgery

I too have a left bundle branch block. This was the red flag that led to the discovery of a previously undiagnosed BAV. Now I know that it runs in the family...my dad probably had it and I have a nephew who had it surgically repaired at age 2 months. He is 30 years old now and doing fine...

    Mechanical Valve Clicking

I have one of the larger ON-X valves. I only hear it late at night usually in bed. It is not unpleasant. It is just kind of there. I am very happy I went with this valve. My target INR is now 2.0 to 2.5 per my cardiologist. This is lower than the 2.5 to 3.0 set by my surgeon. Coumadin has not...

Is it possible to get off Metoprolol?

My dosage was cut in half 2 months ago.

    Work Release

I was given 12 weeks by my surgeon and I returned to work in 10 weeks. My disability insurance initially was set at 8 weeks. No question to extend it to 10 weeks once the post-surgery paperwork was submitted by my surgeon.

Diagnosed with a Bicuspid Valve....need opinions.

Pete: I do not know if there are any hard set rules. If he said 3 months and not 6 months I would say your surgery date will be sooner than later. My feeling was that if my surgery was inevitable I wanted to get it done ASAP due to the size of my aortic aneurysm which was 4.9 cm. I can not say...

    Justin: Here are my INR numbers since surgery after leaving the hospital. 3/29-1.7, 4/2 1.4, 4/3 1.4, 4/5 2.2, 4/9 2.3, 4/12 2.7, 4/19 2.2, 4/26 3.2, 5/7 3.3, 5/21 2.2, 6/4 2.7,6/18 3.9, 7/2 2.9. At this point my new range was set for 2.0 to 2.5. 7/25 2.5, 8/16 2.4. next test is in three weeks...

Surgery duration and average time on the Pump for a straight AVR?

Tony, for comparison here are my times. I did have a significant anuerysm so my entire ascending aorta was replaced. So, my times are longer. I had about 90 minutes of prep time in the OR. Actual surgery was from 9:45 am till I was moved to the ICU at 6:30 pm. I had Deep Hypothermic Cardiac...

One year old daughter passed away. Found out she had BAV.

Dear Crystal: So sad to hear of your loss. It is very wise to have your other children checked. You should also get checked as well as any siblings and their children. 1. Yes, I believe if the BAV is extremely stenosed it could possibly cause sudden death or if the ascending aorta aneuryism...

    Prominent Aortic Root?

My understanding is that 3.5 and 3.3 are "normal". "Prominent" may mean it is significantly larger than that. If your root is anywhere near 5.0 cm it would be wise to get it taken care of when the valve is replaced. Why put yourself through another OHS. I have the ON-X valve with the attached...

My Post Op Thread and thanks!

Justin: Congrats on making it to the other side. I also have an ON-X valve with the graft. Tommorrow I am 5 months post-op. I am doing fine. My cardilogist loves the ON-X valve and feels very confident about it. Because of this my INR range has been lowered from 2.5-3.0. Now the new range is...

    Bomb dropped night before surgery

lynnpc: My surgeon Dr. Bavaria is one of the pioneers in the TAVI procedure. Penn has quite a few good videos on You Tube. (like the link in my signature) Bavaria and Penn are fabulous. I had a very complex successful surgery. I am 5 months post-op and doing great! Good luck!

    My surgery experience

Congrats....and welcome to the other side! Now you are in control......as my surgeon said....walk...walk...walk!!!! I too have an ON-X Valve and had my aorta repaired. Interesting that your INR is targeted at 1.5 to 2.0. My cardio has lowered mine from the surgeon specified 2.5 to...

Diagnosed with a Bicuspid Valve....need opinions.

If you are near Philadelphia, go to the University Of Pennsylvania and make an appointment with Dr. Bavaria. He is fantastic! I was asymptomatic. You have significant symptoms. I personally would not wait until November. If your ascending aorta is dialated near 5.0 cm, you may be a ticking timebomb.

    Strugglng with my decision

I actually found great comfort in viewing the video. Yes, I had the entire ascending aorta replaced. I credit my fabulous recovery to being prepared for surgery on all levels. Add to that a great family doctor who did an EKG during my yearly physical in Oct. 2012. Which discovered my heart...

    Strugglng with my decision

Shellbell: I saw a therapist before surgery and joined the YMCA. I lost 10 lbs before surgery and was physically, mentally and spiritually prepared. My surgery was lengthy and complicated. Click on the video link in my signature. It shows my surgeon doing a similiar surgery and discussing all...

    Strugglng with my decision

Shellbell:Neither choice is perfect. It is a very personal decision. But either will save your life. I started out thinking tissue because of the desire to avoid the necessity of coumadin with a mechanical valve. But, once I researched the specifics of my condition and the positives and...
