Probability of either a-fib or permanent memory issues post-surgery

Well, that cooling of the brain bit is quite sobering. I have chosen a hospital that is highly rated for outcomes for valve replacement according to surgeonratings.org as is my surgeon. I suppose it all beats the alternative.

Thanks for the clear description of your brain fog. If that's what I'm in for I'll be fine.

Probability of either a-fib or permanent memory issues post-surgery

Interesting take, Gerry. At 58 I've already had tastes of less than perfect memory and if I were this way post-surgery I'd be fine. Thanks for your input.

Probability of either a-fib or permanent memory issues post-surgery

Wow, just two hours? I wonder where I got the idea the whole thing would be 8 hours. If anyone else out there is reading this and got valve replacement + aneurysm repair, I'd love to hear estimates of surgery time.

Probability of either a-fib or permanent memory issues post-surgery

Also, I appreciate your reference to Marcus Aurelius as it reminds me of something the Buddhists teach about suffering. Buddhists say that any time we suffer misfortune, two arrows fly our way. The first arrow is the actual bad event, which can, indeed, cause pain. The second arrow is the...

Pellicle, thank you for your thoughtful, and hopeful response. I needed that. So this tells me I have a 97% chance of not needing a pacemaker. I'll take those odds. Re pump head. So it seems to me you're saying it is reversible, with effort. I am thinking that things like continuing to learn...

Probability of either a-fib or permanent memory issues post-surgery

Hello, I'm one of those who are in the 'waiting room' around here. I got my surprise diagnosis of bicuspid av about a year ago. I'm 58, asymptomatic, with a 4.2 aneurysm and in severe stenosis. I've met with two cardiologists and two surgeons and our plan of action is to wait for symptoms or for...

    Plain old AVR

I too am in the Waiting Room. It's been a year now. I'm in the severe AS category, awaiting symptoms or a worsening exhibited my 6-month echo. I feel my affairs are in order as I've met with two cardiologists and two surgeons and I've made my choices in those categories. This past year...

My Edwards Pericardial Aortic Valve is now in the double digits! 10 years today....

Forgive my ignorance, but is this a tissue valve? 10 years is a great amount of time! Here's to 10 more!

    Doc reversed the diagnosis

Thank you for acknowledging that this is a point of contention in the medical community. I feel that I have done all of my homework. I have met with two different cardiologists. I have my cardiologist chosen. After interviewing two of the three surgeons recommended to me by my cardiologist...

    Doc reversed the diagnosis

Thanks for the clarification. So you're saying you were in Severe Stenosis stage from 2002 to 2008 or about 5-6 years? During that time did you do echos every 6 months?

    Doc reversed the diagnosis

Yes at my age I am thinking that if I go with tissue I could be looking at 2 OHS and one TAVR and maybe even in that order because doing a 2nd OHS at a younger age would most likely be a good move. No perfect answers here but I do appreciate your insight. Thanks for your thoughts. I have a...

    Doc reversed the diagnosis

Yes, I'm going with a tissue valve unless they discover some reason that I can't.

    Doc reversed the diagnosis

I just discovered I have severe stenosis out of the blue about a year ago. I have zero symptoms. Are you saying you went 20 years in the state of severe stenosis, just watching it periodically on echos? What was the thing that made you determine to have surgery? I'd love it if I could just stay...

    Crazy Numbers

I live in Austin and I was total Austin Heart Hospital is a high volume center and therefore a good choice. Supposedly the best in town is Dr. Dewan. Dr. Kerendi and Dr. Felger have also been recommended. Hope this helps.
