Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

I have a bit of post-surgery sinus tachycardia, and they have me on Carvedilol. Pre-surgery, my resting heart rate was in the high 50s and today it’s around 90. I can walk at a reasonably brisk pace, nevertheless, without much exertion. I was on the verge of a jog, and my heart rate only got up...

Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

I may not get to leave the hospital today after all. We will see. My INR is only 1.6 and they want me at at least 2.0. I’m bummed because I get bad insomnia at the hospital. Also, it’s my Mom’s birthday— she’s in town to help out with my recovery, and it would be really nice to be released on...

A friend of mine says the St. Jude Regent looks like the air vents on her '92 Mazda.

Not bad. Shoulder hurts, and I've been icing it, but for pain meds, I'm taking nothing more than Acetaminophen, because all the opioid pain meds make me feel yucky. They say it will get better now that the chest tube is out.

1.5 and rising. The surgeon recommends eating foods containing vitamin K while in the hospital and getting it checked daily, so I had some broccoli yesterday.

The former was implied, although the latter would be pretty funny.

Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

I’m still on a liquid diet for now. Not a lot of pain at the incision or chest tube, but my shoulder hurts. The current nurse says they might have put me in some acrobatic positions during surgery. Only taking Acetaminophen now, because stronger painkillers give me nausea.

    I had a mini-sternotomy. Only 3 inches.

Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

Surgery went well. Got a St. Jude mechanical valve. Pain and anti-nausea drugs made me super drowsy this morning, but now I’m walking and eating clear fluids.

Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

I had my CTA scan today (Thursday). Because there was lots of activity happening in the waiting area for the scan, it was hard for me to relax. They ended up giving me multiple beta blockers to get my heart rate below 60. I was surprised that they require a heart rate below 60, given that the...

Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

Yes! After one doctor heard my murmur when I was 17, none of the several doctors who listened to my heart heard it afterwards until I was 40! When I was 17, he was quite adamant that I had a murmur, nevertheless, and correctly so! He said it was obvious. So good on him for hearing it, or bad on...

Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

A week and some hours away now -- I have my CTA scan scheduled for Thursday, January 2nd, and then I'm supposed to prep for surgery on Monday, the 6th. I have to arrive at 5:30am on Tuesday the 7th for surgery. I have to wrap up a bunch of stuff at work, too, before I go on medical leave, so I...

Migraine aura anyone? Or does the cheese stand alone?

It seems to be related to allergies for me -- that is, when the pollen count is high, I'm more likely to get a migraine. Also, I sometimes get them when I'm about to get a cold.

Aortic valve repair or replacement, early 2020

I do have BAV, but do not currently have aortic aneurysm, knock on wood. I do have severe regurgitation and an enlarged left ventricle, which was the deciding factor for surgery.
