Incision on chest not healed completely.

So..... I’ve been using Aquaphor on my non-healing sternum (bottom-most part) and covering it with gauze. Now the scab’s not hiding anything, I think I see why it’s not healing : There’s a clear, possibly plastic? fishing-line -looking wire sticking out, with what may be knots in the end of...

    Up and down INR!?

Just curious - when you all have a low, out of range INR like this.... do you try not to take your daily vitamin k, or maybe skip your usual salad or avocado etc? (In fear/anxiety of setting off a tia) Or do you keep your diet and supplements the same, so that you know when your inr increases...

    Superglue and wounds (on warfarin)

I don’t know, lol. I can tell you that grocery bills have increased what with wild-caught salmon and organic free range pasture-raised grain-fed hand-washed daily-picked eggs. and cheese. The thing is, CC insists you should keep your incision open to air, and dry. But after following that...

The mental fog’ll go away. Just rest a lot, take it easy, don’t do too much or twist your upper body and stuff. Taking naps? Good excuse to start! ; )

5 myths of heart valve surgery Dr Marc Gerdisch

I have pangs now and then, or more often if it’s right after my incision opens up again/the scab comes off; but I have more pain in my pecs i guess. By sternum, you mean right in the center, right? Is it sharp pain, or more kind of constant aches, or what? Could a CT tell you anything at that...

    Superglue and wounds (on warfarin)

Man oh man I wish wish wish I could just use that on my incision. Sigh.

    Chest wound plaster

What is that?? Do you have a photo of your incision site?

Migraine aura anyone? Or does the cheese stand alone?

Not sure how much you can trust a book called ‘magic home remedies,’ but it did include (for other ailments) treatment that I’ve tried and known to be effective, so..

    Chest wound plaster

Wow. Where was that? I kinda wish they’d done that for me.. then I wouldn’t be dealing with a still-open bottom of my incision at 9 weeks post-op... If you have a bandage on your incision at six weeks.... I mean I’ve never heard of that... how do you know if it’s healing? You can’t see it? You...

I've crossed the line into severe and need to make a decision

Interesting.... I went off Metoprolol for just a day, and my nice low 50s heart rate jumped up to 115 at rest this morning. The out-of-breath feeling I hadn’t really felt since before surgery was back! Only without exertion! It scared me into taking a pill... Maybe I’ll try again next month.....

Hi Chuck, Did you notice feeling any differently when you came off the Metoprolol? Just curious.

Hey, Mark, I just found this, which might be helpful. I wish I’d taken things like this more seriously. The recommended arm stretching cc has in its binder may have contributed to my incision not healing.... in hindsight I’d use these stretching- and getting-dressed-guidelines instead...

You’ll be seeing your current INR every day, and can always reduce the dose a bit if you do get out of range. And better to be high (well, 3s and 4s) than low, anyway. Hope everything goes well for you. Have you found the secret graham cracker drawer on your laps around the unit? It’s the...

I've crossed the line into severe and need to make a decision

So, when you’re exercising, do you feel your pec muscles kinda moving around a bit, or any sharp short pangs, or anything to remind you that you just had heart surgery? I often feel these things on a walk. So.. just curious about others. Great news about your pulse. You’re really good at...

So....why are they not increasing your warfarin dose? If 6 mg was enough I think you’d have seen an increase after two days. I would get a second or third opinion about that. Not that it’ll be fun. But... whatever gets you the f&@* out of there.

As I suspected: Emotional stress including depression, insomnia, stress and loneliness induce heart disease

^ that said, if you do get a dog, watch a bunch of old Dog Whisperer (Cesar Millan) episodes first. : )

Flying home after valve surgery, anyone have any experiences to share or pointers?

My brain has seemingly erased, mercifully, most of my post-surgery flight experience; what I do remember is that 1. I was extremely nauseous the entire first flight, and I never get airsick... So there was that. I don’t even know if something like Dramamine is contraindicated on warfarin...

First post from Maryland - advice and support needed!

The two-days-after-discharge follow up appointment is just an ekg, I THINK.... So as long as you’re feeling okay, you can just check in with a local doctor. Just make sure to have any and all unanswered questions ready to ask the NP, because there’s a lot of information they won’t just...

Keep your mind strongly focused on your INR reaching the goal, and don’t eat any salad! That’s what I did and the next day I was discharged - coincidence??? ; )

I've crossed the line into severe and need to make a decision

Also, just a heads up, but a couple doctors told me that if/when I do come off metoprolol, I should taper off, taking half a pill a day for a week (so 12.5 mg) before stopping completely. Don’t know how much truth there is to this, and it may be too late if you’ve already stopped, but I just...
