First post from Maryland - advice and support needed!

Hi - I’m a bit late to the party; missed this thread somehow. Unlike caro (above), I didn’t have a good experience at all with the majority of the staff, nurses and doctors included, before and after my AVR, at C.C...I’ve tried to find peace with all that happened, and excuse them as just...

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

Hi, @caro Thanks for the advice. I’ll relook at MyChart. Did you switch to a different beta blocker after that, or just stop taking it or what?

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

Dear Tezza, Have you gotten yourself a fishbellies corn bag? I’m cozied up with mine right now. : ) It is unexpected how my shoulder and back and pectoral muscle pain comes and goes, and doesn’t just get better as time goes by. Something must be healing that wasn’t ready to heal before. I...

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

Hello. Thank you for your thoughts. It’s on the opposite side to where the drain tubes were. Nerves.... I didn’t consider that. No pain, tenderness etc. and HR and BP are fine. I know, I know, it could be wayyyy worse... I just feel weird ignoring such weird, persistent symptoms. The...

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

A question: I have a recurring, brief flutter in my abdomen, about five inches above my bellybutton, and an inch to my left. Almost as if a tiny baby were trying to stick his foot out of the aorta. Brand new sensation, never felt it prior to AVR 3 weeks ago. When was everyone’s first post-op...

    Self-monitoring INR from the start

You can add soy sauce to mask (some of) the taste. Or use the (usually) included mustard packets. Good luck. Warn your wife so she can leave the room or get downwind.

    Self-monitoring INR from the start

I’m not.... that’s why I was eating them in the first place...

    Self-monitoring INR from the start

Unless something else is going on, (it’s the [post-op] human body, so that’s likely, but) I’ve found that eating a single Brussels sprout brings my INR down 0.6 points! lol

    Abdominal (aortic?) ‘flutter’

I’ve noticed a strange feeling post-AVR. It started once or twice a day, around post-op day 15 or so, and I’m now feeling it more than a dozen times an hour, on this, post-op day 20. It’s like a brief tightness / flutter in my abdomen, about six inches above my bellybutton, and two inches to my...

    Tomorrow 's the day

A speedy recovery to you!! As good as CC’s view from the room, yogurt parfaits, gift shop, paintings on the walls, roasted red potatoes and secret drawer of graham crackers were, (have you found it? you’ll have to take a walk first! ;) ) I’m so glad to be home. Hope you can go home soon too...

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

Thank you, Chuck. I’m still at day 17, so I’ll try and be more patient. : ) Just thought I wouldn’t have to deal with bruises that never go away till I was about 90 or so. And I don’t mean to gripe about doctors here but I swear, I swear, I swear it’s true. There are no surveys afterwards...

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

Oh, I also want to ask about bruises - I still have these big green marks under my skin all over the place, from all the IVs and three heparin shots they did in the hospital post-AVR. It’s been two weeks but they haven’t gone away at all, which is very very unlike me, so I assume it’s either the...

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

Thank you, @Chuck C . Gosh, your poor wife! I hope she’s feeling better. We have to take care of our caregivers, don’t we? My husband has had to do so much more than I thought he would these last weeks - showing up early and staying late at the hospital, bringing food and drinks and blankets and...

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

How long till you guys could drive? I had a minimally invasive AVR 2 1/2 weeks ago. I stopped pain meds a week ago. I can turn to look over my shoulders. Incision site looks pretty good: My cardiologist was supposed to clear me to drive, but as one of you fellow posters put it best, he was an...

On the Flip Flop ..with a little extra hardware

This made me laugh, thank you, Lynn. I also had my doubts over whether they were really watching the monitor from the faraway nurse’s desk. : )

    Post Surgery update

Oh Tezza, I also felt traumatized by the surgery... there were just so many surprises (nurses sucked, couldn’t breathe the whole first day and night, was admitted even before the surgery because they ****** up the cardiac cath; shooting, almost electrical pain in my arm just by moving the...

my self management results for 2020

Chuck - Yet another reason to move back to California. : ) God! I have had to fight and fight and make up INRs just to get a single month’s worth of 1 mg pills! (And even that came with protestations of “I don’t want to be responsible...” from the prescribing nurse!) I’ve spent days calling...

my self management results for 2020

On the phone with the ‘Coumadin clinic’ last night, I tried to convince the nurse to let me take 4.5 mg day, or 4.5 a couple days a week and 5 the others, instead of 2.5 mg one day, then 5 mg the next, when it gets a bit out of range, which is their protocol. “What?? 4.5? There is no 4.5 mg...

    Imminent AVR - 40 y.o. female - advice please

Thank you. It looked a little like your second picture this morning, as far as the whitish-yellowish pus-like stuff, but without the liquid drop. Now it’s drying out; this is a couple hours ago:
