    Heart pounds against ribs

This is a normal physiologic effect. The deeper the breath, the more negative the vacuum created inside your chest. This expands your lungs and draws air into them, but everything else inside your chest, including the vena cava and the heart chambers, expands from the negative pressure around...

Looking for advice on Tissue V Mechanical valve

What "certain activities"? Sword swallowing? Eating lightbulbs? I do everything I did before surgery. I have a rather extreme car and motorcycle hobby and run open road races at VERY high speed. No problem

    Insight? BAV w/ aortic aneurysm

jbrett: Yes, these aneurysm to body size indexes have been mentioned here before. So, right now you are below the indication for surgery. Although these things do tend to progress, there is no way to predict the rate of progression. You might be perfectly stable for quite a while or not...

    Heart Cath... Required?

The new high resolution, rapid (10 seconds) CAT scans with contrast as so good you can do just about anything that a cath can do but measure pressures. That's what I had. The coronaries and the minutest of vessels throughout your thorax are completely visible. So, I don't think there will be...

    Shopping?

Each surgeons usually has a valve s/he generally prefers for AVR but nearly all of them will tell you they will put in whatever you want. I don't think there is any concrete way for lay persons like us to select the best valve by reviewing the available literature. The medical literature just...

Shocked, Overwhelmed, and Waiting.....Newly Aware New Member

You have a lot going on there! Take a deep breath and try to relax. Before you jump to conclusions, you need to wait for the results of your tests. Your symptoms of a crushing sensation in your chest with chest, neck, jaw and arm pain would concern me too. I trust you have made your...

False Increases in INRs - QC doesn't catch - WARNING

There is no good way to know whether adding or removing another drug or some food is causing a real effect on INR or a false one unless you do confirmatory lab draws every time you do this. This is an important warning that the meter manufacturers should make clear upfront. It appears you had...

On-X Life Technologies Releases Expected Timelines for Reduced Anticoagulation Study

Julian: I agree with your perspective. Nobody else has been willing to take the risk On-X is taking here. The other possible claim they could make despite the increased thromoembolic events in the low dose group versus control, is that the rate may still be less than has been seen with other...

Can anyone help me understand my echo results and what they mean?

I'm guessing your current doctors may be recommending surgery fairly soon based on the severe stenosis, high pressure gradient and LV changes, although you appear to be well compensated, retaining good cardiac function. A second opinion is always a good thing. In my case, with a heart a lot...

On-X Life Technologies Releases Expected Timelines for Reduced Anticoagulation Study

I'm not saying there is ANYTHING wrong with the On-X valve compared to other valves. Let's not get carried away. It's just from the study results as On-X has described it, I see nothing to show it has any practical advantage. What I believe they are reporting, an increase in thromboembolism...

Scared So I Will Vent to You Guys

ACTIVITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH COUMADIN STABILITY. NOTHING! Let her do what she likes. It's a complete fallacy that exercise does anything to affect warfarin metabolism. There are almost NO drugs whose metabolism is affected by exercise. Warfarin, and many other drugs, are metbaolized by a...

Fast vs. slow metabolism of warfarin

Although it has been years since this thread was posted, I need to correct this. Liver blood flow does not affect warfarin metabolism. There are some drugs for which this is true. These are called "high clearance" drugs; ones for which the liver is very efficient at removing, so that the more...

On-X Life Technologies Releases Expected Timelines for Reduced Anticoagulation Study

I don't understand how this is a good thing or why a similar result wouldn't happen with any valve. If you reduce the intensity of anticoagulation, you would always expect throembolism rates to rise and hemmorhage rates to fall, so the composite would be the same. Why is this an advantage?

My latest Echocardiogram ------- What do these numbers tell you guys??

My reports have not displayed many of those numbers and I don't know what many of those are either. The findings and impressions areas cover the signficant issues and seem complete. The issue for you is your aortic root. Everything else looks very good. Your root is still within normal...

Hey everyone, Just asking for some support.

I don't think your condiiton is so bad you should be so terribly worried about sudden death. If you were truly at any significant risk of that, I'm sure your cardiologist would make arrangements for you to have surgery in the next few days. I was almost exactly in your condition and dealt with...

Chest tube hole not closing up

Wow! Glad they caught the infection. Watch your INR while on Bactrim - it generally goes up about 70%.

Hey everyone, Just asking for some support.

There's not much to figure out here. You need surgery. Your "numbers" are like mine were, getting into the severe territory, and I had essentially no symptoms. With your tiny valve area and high pressure gradients (same as mine), bad things are not far enough away that you can put this off...

Surgery set for June 1st. Dental work this week. Nervous!

I don't know if the amoxicillin is normal for all root canals or if the dentist is showing some concern for your BAV, even though antibiotics are not called for until you get the mechanical valve. Post-op you will be on heparin, an IV anticoagulant, for a few days while waiting for the oral...
