    Blood shearing

Pretty much same problem here. My HGB, HCT, RBC has been declining for about 2 years. LDH is high, ferritin normal. (OHS in 2017 replaced tricuspid, aortic and mitral valves, the latter two are mechanicals). I was able to get on Aranesp when HGB hit 9.6 even though I've been symptomatic...

Does Vitamin K2 interfere with Coumadin or affect INR?

I have noticed that Vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7 affects INR (lowers it with about the same effect as Vitamin K1) whereas vitamin K2 in the form of MK-4 does not. That is just my experience. As pellicle said, everyone is different. Your mileage may vary. -Dana

    tissue vs. mechanical

I'm having some trouble treating it. Neither my primary care physician nor my cardiologist thought I was ready for Aranesp (a synthetic erythropoietin) which stimulates RBC production in the bone marrow, even though my Hgb was 9.6 (normal for men is 13.5 - 18.0 g/dL) and symptomatic. Finally...

    tissue vs. mechanical

Here's a risk with mechanical valves that I didn't find out about until seven years after OHS when my two mechanical valves started shearing red blood cells resulting in hemolytic anemia. Newer valves and or fewer valves may be less susceptible to hemolytic anemia in mechanical valve...

    tissue vs. mechanical

While not a perfect substitute for a MedicalAlert tag, Medical info is available to a first responded on your iPhone. I don't know about other phones but it's likely the same. Without knowing your password anyone can touch the emergency button and display the medical info you have entered...

Once benign post-surgery AV block has now gone bad

They work fine with an artificial valve. I have 3 artificial valves. My pacemaker implant was actually before any valves and it was necessary for worsening AV block. (AV node damaged by radiation 40 years prior to its failing.) The PM is an easy decision and I would try to schedule it ASAP...

Mechanical Valve Noise and Quality of Life Study

I have two thoughts. 1. If you don't already, exercise a lot so you'll be really tired at night. 2. I'm an engineer so give me a problem and I can't help thinking of a solution. This hasn't been invented yet but here's a possible product: with our current technology for tiny in-ear noise...

    Pretty well decided....I Think.

Doctor increased my dose of beta-blocker metoprolol arguing it would reduce contractility, which is the strength of force with which the heart muscle contracts, thereby reducing the slamming of the valves. Has it worked? I don't know yet. It's been about a month. My haptoglobin was...

    Pretty well decided....I Think.

One more topic to discuss with your doctor is the potential for hemolysis with a mechanical valve. I have two mechanical valves, a St Jude and a SORIN not to mention one tissue valve. One or both mechanicals is slicing and dicing red blood cells causing hemolytic anemia. I won't go into it but...

I don’t know what to do anymore

Loud? You should try two mechanical valves beating simultaneously. My wife can hear it (sometimes from across the dinner table) but it does change. There are times when it is not that loud. Not sure why but changing body position changes the sound and having a full stomach changes it. I...

Heart Beat in rhythm of three

Sorry about that post, couldn't figure out how to delete it... I just now saw what I had missed previously. The follow-up on Jan 23!

Heart Beat in rhythm of three

Curious if there was any follow-up on this? Above joke notwithstanding, before I got my pacemaker, I had every third beat missing. It's a 2nd degree AV block called 3-2 Wenckebach block, due to, not really a block but, poor conduction between the SA node and the AV node which, for me, was due...

    INR Jump-intestinal issues

You didn't mention taking any antibiotics for your stomach bug so this is just for future reference: most of the antibiotics will increase INR.

INR of 1.0 with mechanical valve

Just a data point, but of course everyone is different. Having two mechanical valves my INR range is 2.5-3.5 and I get there with 8-10 mg warfarin per day. (I also eat about 250 mcg vItamin K per day in greens.). I think that 2.5-3.5 range is recommended for anyone with a mechanical valve...

Looking for a community of fellow artificial valve folks

Welcome Zoe, you've come to the right place. You can influence and stabilize your INR with consistent vitamin K intake, but not perfectly of course because there are other things that affect your INR like exercise, alcohol, medicine (antibiotics, acetaminophen, others) and non-vitamin K foods...

After your surgery, what are some of the things that you found out that surprised you

I had three tubes but what surprised me is the answer I got to the question, when will you pull these out? Ans. when the daily output drops below 700 ml. OMG, if it drops to 650 ml/day and there are no drainage tubes, where is all the fluid going to go? Well I found out! It fills up your...

    Bleeding issue

I have found that vitamin K1 supplements from a bottle do exactly as expected in terms of being a warfarin antagonist but even more reliably than food sources because you know exactly what you're getting, for example 100 mcg per tablet. However, I would expect the veggies win out if you look at...

    Bleeding issue

Agree with above idea of sticking with advice of doctor. But here's a piece of anecdotal information. I've been on warfarin for 5 years at 8 mg per day targeting an INR range of 2.5-3.5 (two mechanical valves). If I didn't eat greens my INR would be through the roof because vitamin K checks...

    Up and down INR!?

Thanks. Good paper. First time I've ever seen quantitative information on K2 MK-7 effects on INR and it shows it to be more potent than K1 as I've found empirically. It will be interesting to do the math comparing these numbers with my own findings.
