Last year, being 58, it took a little longer for me, but I was doing all of my regular fitness within 3 months of the surgery, with the exception of lifting or anything putting extra stress on my healing sternum. Similar but I improved a little quicker when I was 37.

Welcome to the forum. I had my first OHS at 37 and I was asymptomatic also. They found a large clump of calcification on my biscuspid valve and were afraid it could break off and cause a stroke. So, I dealt with the same questions as to timing. Being young and in good health should help you...

Traveling out of state for next heart surgery

I had my first OHS in 2001 at Duke. After I was released from the hospital I stayed there a couple more days in a local hotel, but I flew to Chicago I believe 8 or 9 days after my surgery. If you inform the hospital/surgeon, they will advise you when you can fly home assuming no complications.

Smartwatch / Wearable for Heart recommendations

Sorry, I am Apple, but I did buy an Apple watch last year before my procedure. It can tell me my blood oxygen, do an ECG, heart rate. There can probably be more but that is what I have used. Love it!

    Greeting from the UK

Daryl, I had aortic valve surgery for BAV in 2001 and for years my cardiologist never checked for ascending aneurysm despite the medical literature connecting the two. So, when first discovered at 4.8, I too freaked out. I was then sent to my surgeon who calmed me down significantly and told...

New Here - AVR on 10/19/22

Welcome Mike. I am now 9 months post OHS. 58 years old. Second time around. Got the Inspiris Resilia tissue valve. Feeling great now. Definitely took it easy the first few weeks after surgery and pushed myself more about 3 months out without complications. I hope your recovery goes smoothly!

New member, two weeks out from AVR.

I too am 58 and I had my 2nd OHS 2/7/22 to both replace an ascending aortic aneurysm and my homograph aortic valve. I now have an Inspiris Resilia tissue valve. I did not have significant AF, and I feel pretty good now 8 months out. I wish you a speedy recovery and getting past the AF.

    New, confused, scared, anxious, help

I was going to suggest what 70sdiver posted. Perhaps you can forward the diagnostic results to Cleveland Clinic or another top heart hospital for a second opinion on your options from some of the top rated surgeons out there. After that, they might provide a telehealth visit initially. I wish...

New member Dilated Aortic root at 45mm

Almost 4 years ago, I learned of a 4.9 cm ascending aneurysm and I was referred to a cardiac surgeon who had great success with these surgeries. He suggested to wait and watch it and I remained at 4.9 cm for 3 years. He had said it could 2 years or it could be 5 years. It ended up being 3.5...

Valve selection question from someone who travels half of the year

I am 58 and just had my second OHS mainly for an ascending aortic aneurysm on 2/7/22. They also replaced my homograph and I went with the Inspiris Resilia valve. It was developed around 5 years ago, so not a longer amount of data, but the expectations are that this valve will outlast prior...

    Headed for Cleveland Clinic

Godspeed to you! It is remarkable how the top hospitals and surgeons have this down like it is nothing. The numbers are so much in your favor and you will do great!

    Homograph Aortic Valve Surgery

I received a homograph in 2001 at Duke. I just had OHS 2/7/22 primarily to repair my ascending aortic aneurysm, but they also replaced my homograph since it was staring them in the face and was 21 years old. Without the aneurysm, the homograph would not have needed replacement just yet...

    My AVR OHS Experience

Great to hear from you Timmay! It will get better and better as the days go by. I am at 4 months now and the immediate post-surgery period is already becoming fuzzy.

    My second valve replacement

Rosel, I had my second replacement valve installed 2-7-22. I am 58 and I went with the Inspiris Resilia bovine valve. I previously had a homograph installed in 2001. I needed the recent surgery due to my ascending aortic aneurysm. This valve has only been on the market for around 5 years, so...
