13-year run ending, question re: TAVR

I had the SVD 😜 structural valve degradation after 8 years, pig valve broke after a solid workout. The doctors that first treated me were surprised that I did not get mechanical valve at age 46, and that I was insistent on the TAVR. But after a little more discussion with previous surgeon it...

    Hi All

Welcome John - I went with On-X this past June to replace my bicuspid AV based on doctor recommendation - was not very aware of options. Plus there was a study to get away from Warfarin - that study has since been canceled. All my misgivings about Warfarin were incorrect - I should have gone...

    Aspirin in conjunction with Warfarin

I’m on the asp 80 mg since I got the pig valve in 2014. The On-X was later added in June 2022 to replace the flailed pig valve and I have continued with baby aspirin since, per cardiologist. I take the aspirin in the morning and the warfarin at night. There was a reason to switch to enteric...

New member: 56 yo facing unexpected AVR before the end of the year

It was amazing after 3 months but first three months I tried to be a good patient and not try too much. Now 6 months post op all systems go. But bruises take longer to heal, cuts do not stop as instantly as they once did, need to be a bit more aware of the risks with my own natural clumsiness...

Severe Aortic Regurgitation Leading to Second Surgery

Oh and I ALWAYS ski with my helmet. There’s tons of beginners that have no clue how to stop willing to take you out - sort of like taking warfarin - really good idea.

Severe Aortic Regurgitation Leading to Second Surgery

It’s a different story in Ohio…. I need to make it to CO! Replacement to On-X in June for Father’s Day, been running a fair amount after the rehab bit. Got the green light from the doc to go for it, so back on ski patrol and hustling the toboggan down the hill. Headed to Killington end of the...

Need Help Choosing! 14 Questions For Those With Mechanical Valve + Warfarin

What tommyboy said… My pig valve leaflet tore after 8 years, got the mechanical valve on Fathers Day & all good with INR/warfarin that were previous concerns. I ski & run - took a few months before cleared for full activity but going well now. This was my third OHS and planning on that as my...

Smartwatch / Wearable for Heart recommendations

Yup 3 months out his biking can resume! I was amazed that I bounced back that quick - just need to give a rest for bone to heal ( sternum break😀) and tissues to blend.

    T - 2 days

Just reading your post ‘74 with 5 yo, bicuspid aortic valve - not sure of the rest of your story but hoping you get mechanical valve. I got the pig valve 8 years ago thinking it would last 12 years at least until it broke this past June, so had to go in for the mechanical upgrade. All good with...

    T - 2 days

I am in favor of the light robe - they got me up walking with tubes & all as soon as possible. Shirt is problematic unless you have buttons down the front. Raising arms will take a few days. Zip up hoodie & robe get my votes. Slippers are also helpful. Pants - not so sure about that with the...

Playing football after a valve replacement and warfarin 2 years on

Yeah that too but the fact my chest has been cut open will hard tackles and falls not injury my chest? Broken bones heal in 6-8 weeks. Whether by tackle in football or by surgical bone saw - healed in 6-8 weeks for the most part. After my first OHS at 11 cardiologist was conservative and...

    Replacement in 2 weeks

My surgeon encouraged On-X and this was before I was on the site - I was symptomatic for a month and not clear about direction. There had been an open study about Eliquis in place of Warfarin related to On-X that had my interest. I was quite ignorant to the options and uninformed- really applaud...

    Bloody nose

This is my first winter with warfarin and I read something about humidifier and bloody noses. Thought I might be OK since I am on CPap with humidity but yesterday noticed blood when I blew my nose, and now it is background bleed. No more nose blowing! But just interested in your experience...

    'per patient year' question

Pretty late to the conversation but I saw this early on: The difficulty I have at the moment is valve type choice. It seems to boil down to going bio valve now and facing a re-operation in 15 years (if I am lucky) or go mechanical now That was my plan - pig valve failed after 8 years so now...

    Eliquis and prosthetic heart valves

I was almost signed up for the ProAct study - using Eliquis with mechanical On-X valve - that was discontinued just as I was going to start. So the warning is related to mechanical rather than bio valves but I’m just guessing.

    5k in under 30 minutes!

From my experience - push the bovine as hard as possible through exercise. When it breaks you’ll be in peak condition and the follow up surgery to go mechanical will be easier. I went porcine in 2014, broke it with vigorous exercise in 2022, now back to running & cycling with the mechanical...
