Sweet 16 for Bovine Aortic Valve

Congrats on the 16 yrs! The cow valve they tried did not make it past the surgeon's inspection, so threw in the pig valve instead. That one failed after 8 years, so June 22 went mechanical at 55. More power to you - hope the moo-moo keeps on going. For what its worth - mine failed suddenly...

Do you have sternum pain after open heart surgery?

Sneezing was very intense week or two after surgery- a cold like you describe - yech. The pillow really helped support my sternum. Squeeze pillow tight against the chest before the sneeze - worked great. More preventative tip that I learned was to rub the tip of you nose to stop the sneeze.

New Member Dfw area - St. Jude Valve

Trying to figure out the translations 😜 Elipa is”ok - that’s right”. Rotanmyrkyy is rat poison. Nice card!

Isn’t Warfarin also used to kill rats?

New member intro! Aorta replacement scheduled for Oct 9

I went back to Ann Arbor to the practice that had put in my pig valve in 2014, when I lived in MI. Had the mechanical valve installed this second time around.

New Member Dfw area - St. Jude Valve

I got two century rides in this summer, no bleeding out. I take my weekly finger pinprick for the INR test and the bruise takes a day or two to disappear. I took the pig valve first, 2014, with the thought of the easy TAVR after that valve stopped working- no guarantees- my pig valve broke 2022...

Hoping 3rd time is the charm

I had my first OHS at Strong back in ‘78! I’m sure a lot has changed since then.

    30-Year Anniversary of First OHS

I’ve got the scar with 3 OHS and it is fascinating to see the last scar that healed amazingly well on top of the keloidal mass from my first scar. Also, the lumps / wires / calcification (?) gives my sternum a lot of - texture? 😅

    30-Year Anniversary of First OHS

I’m thinking - Happy Birthday! Maybe still a couple days early. More than half your life was after AVR.

    New heart Surgery Patient.

Ditto to what Chuck said. Personally I planned to get TAVR on my follow up. However, my pig valve did not go stenotic- one of the leaflets broke. I had to get OHS again, and figured with blood thinners/anti coagulation, that life was over. Just last June, 2022. Not true! Active life style...

    Third OHS coming up soon

Chest tubes - wow that is BIG living. That got me so into the moment. I’ve had that done 3x for each OHS. First time I was 11 and did not really know what was going on. Wake Up! Second time seemed like the doc was pulling multiple patient tubes the same afternoon - he was looking almost...

    From the Adirondacks

Hello innovative - love the Adirondacks- daughter is going to school in Burlington. My AVR from 2014 lasted 8 years - I was counting in the 12-15 then TAVR. However, the pig valve did not calcify so that ruled out TAVR. Mechanical was what I needed, so went with that in spite of the rat poison...

mechanical or tissue valve and an active lifestyle?

So eating half a grapefruit would be ok? I’ve been under assumption that none is only answer - my bad. I have had some long bike rides this weekend - also under the impression that physical exertion modifies the INR. I test Mondays so will get to find out today.

    Upcoming Surgery

Good luck Bionic Orange! I did not find this information until after my surgery - not just information, also hope and realistic perspective from people who are living it. Aug 23 is still a ways out. Keep calm & carry on.

Wait - this forum wasn’t even around when you had your surgery😂. Was the World Wide Web even a thing?

Migraine aura anyone? Or does the cheese stand alone?

Good timing on aura relief 😅. My migraines started in 6th grade or so - used to be monthly. Never associated that with my first OHS - probably had them prior. They used to be really bad nausea inducing migraines- always started with auras. I found that baked goods seemed to help - blueberry...

First Surgery Coming Up, And Afraid

Might need to stop reading white papers & just go for a walk. I was in good shape when I had my OHS and that helps the outcome personally. But I am an outlier too. I’m thinking the studies are mostly based on people whose life choices put them in the situation not something they are born with...

Heart valve surgery and male impotency.

I had my surgery when I was 11 and I remember finding the picture of me from the summer before - scar free. My scar did keloid and it’s noticeable but no big deal anymore. I get somewhat self conscious when I’m a patient for ski patrol drills. We practice treatment scenarios with one another...
