Surgery date set for my 2nd OHS, going mechanical this time

Met last week with my surgeon and we agreed on a surgery date of 15 January 2015. I had a Ross Procedure in July 2012 which didn't hold up and now I feel the right thing to do this time is go mechanical due to my age (26) and making the best potentially 'long-term' choice. I am also getting my...

Upcoming second OHS, having trouble deciding which valve this time!

Clay, Pellicle, Northern Lights: Thanks for the additional info about TAVR. Definitely some major things to think about. I will asking many more questions about this next week when I see the surgeon again.

Upcoming second OHS, having trouble deciding which valve this time!

That's amazing your mech valve has lasted so long. Definitely great to hear. After reading through the forums it seems like anti-coagulant therapy really isn't that terrible and it doesn't really restrict people from doing most of the things they loved doing anyway.

Upcoming second OHS, having trouble deciding which valve this time!

In the Marine Corps all of our medical services are provided by the Navy. My cardiologist is a navy officer and I also have a naval medical officer assigned to my unit. Both have confirmed that being on lifelong anti-coagulants is an automatic medical discharge. There is a process called a...

    bench pressing with tissue valve

When I had my Ross Procedure on July 30, 2012 I'm pretty sure I was back in the gym lifting weights around late October 2012. As long as you don't feel pain, you should be fine. Start light and continue to work up to what you used to be. I was 24 when I had my surgery and had a pretty quick...

Upcoming second OHS, having trouble deciding which valve this time!

My first OHS was in July 2012 at 24 years old. I chose the Ross Procedure hoping I'd get longer out of it than a tissue and also not wanting to get medically discharged from the military for being on Coumadin if I chose the mechanical. After my two echos this year, it appears that my Ross...

2nd valve replacement - do I go mechanical this time?

I had the Ross Procedure in July 2012 at 24 years old and I chose it because I wanted to avoid being on anti-coagulants which would have medically separated me from the military. Only 2 1/2 years later and my operation has pretty much failed due to my valve being even more leaky than before the...

    Military service after OHS

I am active duty in the Marines. I found out back in 2012 I had BAV. In 2013 my symptoms worsened and I was placed on a limited duty status. I was advised I would remain on limited duty until I had my BAV surgically corrected. I chose a Ross Procedure which did not require me to be on blood...

Matter of time before I need a re-operation

Also, I haven't had any alarming symptoms. I am not quite as aerobically conditioned as I was well prior to my surgery, but I am still able to tolerate pretty strenuous exercise.

Matter of time before I need a re-operation

So bad news today at the cardiologist. I had the Ross Procedure back in July 2012. I chose these method so that I would not be medically separated from the Marines (which would have happened if I got a mechanical and placed on blood thinners). Since the surgery, I had a pretty fast and smooth...

First Echo 18 Months After Surgery

It has been quite a while since I have posted on here, but figured now would be a good time to get reunited back with the heartvalve forum community! :D So I had the Ross Procedure on July 30, 2012 at the age of 24. I made a great recovery and was back to doing light cardio/weight training 3-4...

    12 Week Post Up Improvements

Haha.... Well I most definitely right now couldn't keep that pace up for a whole mile, not yet at least. But that half mile sprint was also in boots/utility uniform.

12 Weeks Post Op, Scar Tissue Question...

So I'm about 12 weeks outta surgery, feeling really good! Hitting around a 9 minute mile right about now, wanting to shave 2 more off that asap. Also back in the gym doing about everything I was used to doing, even the same amount of weight, except for chest exercises. So I was noticing a few...

First attempt at running since surgery

as far as weights go... I tried a couple "girl" pushups. They didn't feel too good. Gonna hold off on pressing exercises for a bit longer. I was able to complete 3x10 of bicep curls and overhead press with 25lb dumbells with no problem.

First attempt at running since surgery

SO I had my Ross Procedure on July 30, 2012, almost 8 weeks ago. This previous weekend I did some very slow treadmill runs, at about 20 mins duration to see how it felt. I felt pretty good, good controlled breathing, but some slight chest tightness. Tonight, I wanted to run 1 mile on the road...

    Night sweats

This has been a very helpful post. I am almost 3 weeks post op, and I just recently started experiencing the chills, slight fever at night, and sweats during sleep. I haven't sweat that bad in my sleep yet, but enough to feel uncomfortable and have to get out of bed at times. I found it weird...
