2nd OHS scheduled for April 19th 2021, at 67 yrs

Arteries and veins were not cooperating for the angiogram yesterday, many pokes to finally get through the vein for drip and the artery for catheter and finally, the smaller Ulmar artery did the job, but major bruising this time. I asked and interventionist showed me the catheters used, was...

2nd OHS scheduled for April 19th 2021, at 67 yrs

In January 2020, i had my annual physical with GP and at the end of the physical he mentioned it was time to see my Cardiologist. Cardiologist meeting on March 3rd 2020, confirmed a murmur and he said an echo was to be scheduled. Mid March,2 weeks later Covid pandemic hits my region hard (Spring...

2nd OHS scheduled for April 19th 2021, at 67 yrs

In 2006 or so at the age of 53, my GP discovered a heart murmur during a yearly medical. I was referred to a cardiologist and an acho revealed my bicuspid aortic valve and the beginning of stenosis. By early January 2010, at the age of 56, an echo revealed the aortic valve had proceeded to...

Great update Amy, happy you seem to be over the worse of the speed bumps and well on your way to recovery. Day 5 was a major turning point for my 1St OHS, also the day i was released from hospital and smooth sailing thereafter. Wishing you a smooth recovery, feeling better one day at a time.

    Thank You

Welcome Lynn and thanks for posting. Best wishes for your upcoming surgery this coming Thursday and congrats on your choice of a Mechanical valve. At 56 in 2010, I chose a Bio valve and am now overdue for a 2nd OHS. There truly is no given on tissue valves and their longevity and my surgeon is...

I've crossed the line into severe and need to make a decision

Congrats Chuck C on getting to the other side Rather smoothly, with a few incidental speed bumps. i have to thank you for a well documented personal study in this thread, as well as your process to date. It truly does provide very good information to the up and coming AVR ohs patients. Also a...

    Post Surgery update

So sad to hear of a Bumpy four days for you Tezza. Here’s hoping your final 2 drains are out today and that you can be released to the ward to complete your hospital recovery. Your 2nd ohs turned out to be another bio, looking forward to more info on that choice, although your number of...

Cath 3 days before valve replacement- question

Chuck C, when looking at the proximity of your cath and surgery, how does that timing work with your local Covid 19 and hospital protocol? Was told last week, that it will need a Covid 19 test, 48 hours before the angiogram. i will also need a Covid 19 test 48 hours before surgery. Does your...

I've crossed the line into severe and need to make a decision

All descriptions above are as i remember them for my angiogram/heart cath, done 11 years ago. The Right wrist was used in my case for the angiogram, but some in the recovery room had theirs done via the leg. If Iodine/shellfish allergy, this will need pre-treatment. The test was about 60...

    Choosing valve for surgery #2

Tezza, i have a whole lot of similarity to your case, but am 10 years older and in Canada vs Australia. Am also up for 2nd surgery and AVR . 11 years ago, is Also hoped for longer bio valve life, as well as easier surgery if/when needed, bus alas. TAVR has also been deemed too risky for me as...

I've crossed the line into severe and need to make a decision

This made me smile, as I may well end up being on a warfarin regime For life and if so, so be it. The surgeon will make the final call, as described below. I have a recollection of being on a warfarin regime and INR testing after my Bio AVR in May 2010, but cant remember if it was for 30 or 90...

Tissue Valvers. How Old is Yours?

Yes, i also have an Epic Porcine, ESP-100, but from St-Jude Medical and mine was an aortic replacement, male, done in May 2010 at 56 years old. Am now 67 and due for replacement, just shy of 11 yrs. Yearly Echoes now seem a Good idea, i was likely too infrequent and the last echo was quite a...

I've crossed the line into severe and need to make a decision

Chuck C, i agree with your leaning to a mechanical valve at your age and activity level. The Choice of Bio vs Mech valve, was a tough decision for me in 2010 at 56 years of age. So my bio valve is just shy of 11 years old today and there was some hope in 2010 that the St-Jude bio could possibly...

I've crossed the line into severe and need to make a decision

Excellent thread Chuck C and contributors, very informative. To add on why certain tests. My sept 2020 echo indicated my 10 yr old prosthetic bio aortic valve is failing and an aortic redo/replacement is needed soon, .456 was my echo result. Interventionist upon revue of echo scheduled a CT...
