First post from Maryland - advice and support needed!

I’m at day 8 now and INR is 1.7. They’re telling me it’s the only thing holding me back. The bleed stopped. My only other issues are gout (which is resolving, but frustrating when it comes to trying to move) and constant migraines. I’ve had like ten migraine auras the past 36 hours. Fortunately...

2.5 goal. They had to end up putting in St Jude due to the calcification they encountered.

Thanks caro- could you recommend someone in particular at Wilmer to talk to about this?

Gosh, it just won’t clot. Heparin works as advertised apparently. I’m still getting a small leak that needs to be changed every few hours. The surgical fellow even popped a couple new stitches in this afternoon since he thought it was bleeding from the original suture site. The NP just wrapped...

Looks like I’ll still be here a while. They forgot (!!) to give me Coumadin two days ago when they transferred me from ICU to step down . My INR this morning is still sitting at 1.3. On a brighter note, everything else seems to be getting better daily with no significant issues. Thanks to all...

The weird (minor?) stuff I’m dealing with today: One of the three drainage sites began bleeding again today, tube was removed yesterday morning. They’re changing the gauze pad every hour or two Taste is still weird at day 5. Everything tastes salty. Orange juice is the most normal tasting...

Feeling pretty good today, 5 days after the surgery began (to the hour). Head is pretty clear, pain is very light when I’m sitting still. They’re trying to get my INR right which is slow moving. It was still only at 1.3 yesterday and they haven’t gotten the overnight result back yet...

Step down not happening today but only because they’re out of beds.

Made it through everybody. I’ll have details soon. Still in ICU but they tell me everything is going well and step down may happen today.

I’m bright and early tomorrow, 5 am arrival at the hospital. Hope to give you all updates soon. I know I’ll have some questions for the veterans in here at some point! Thanks again to everybody.

I think his opinion was kind of extreme (as you know, he’s an extreme kind of guy haha). But the plumbing makes sense. Although when I looked it up in the past, I don’t think BAV patients are at higher risk for heart attack, so I don’t think this is a common occurrence. Hopefully that’s a...

It is! But also a bit strange because I’ve been having angina for the past 4-5 years and my cardiologists up until now have been treating it as CAD all this time. What if it’s really the valve and dilated aorta causing the angina all this time? My gradients haven’t been too high all this time...

Mentioned this elsewhere but just to keep this thread complete - cath turned out clean so I’ll be having a standard Bentall with no extras.

Cath 3 days before valve replacement- question

Amy, sorry to hear that they blamed you for being emotional, that’s very unprofessional. But I’m confused about the arrhythmia part - if they were unable to reach the heart, how could the radial vasospasms result in arrhythmia? Or was that due to the cath itself?

Cath 3 days before valve replacement- question

So I had my cath today and they had a lot of trouble with the right wrist and had to go to the groin instead. After 6 hours of recovery my wrist blew up (hematoma) and had to painfully squeeze it down. No big deal in the grand scheme of things, but babying a wrist and a groin tonight. I’m...

Met with Dr Svensson for the first time today. A couple significant differences between his plan and Dr Bavaria’s that I thought I’d share. 1) Bavaria wanted to do hemiarch. Svensson said he would prefer not, and suggested only a 2% aneurism rate over 15 yrs for patients in my situation who do...

    Cleveland Clinic Questions

I’ve spent the past two days visiting CC so I can answer what I did. Others may differ. I initiated contact using an online form on the website, which had an entry for which surgeon you prefer. They called back IIRC with the surgeon’s office assistant setting things up. I needed to send my...

    Dental work post-surgery

Thanks all for the feedback. Yes CC has a form that needs to be approved by my dentist. Already signed, having a crown done before surgery. Otherwise putting everything off until January. They’ve always recommended antibiotics for me due to BAV but I’ve seen that this has been a debated topic in...

Thanks for your insight and advice Amy! I’ve actually had persistent cardiac shoulder pain for a few years now, which is why I asked. Although my cardiologists think it’s CAD related and not AV related. (the running theory is prinzmetal angina, so it’s not persistent in the sense that it’s...
