    Surgery to feel better?

I slept a lot before my surgery. I was exhausted [U]all of the time. I yawned on my way to work in the mornings, drank about a pot of coffee during the day, and went to the couch when I got home in the evenings. All of that went away after I had my surgery. I could not believe how much energy I...

    Pros and Cons of Shands

I hear really good things about Shands. We have some members that have been there. I traveled from Pensacola to Birmingham, about 5 hours away for my surgery. My personal thought is to extend your stay in a hotel, etc. by a few days before you travel back home, if you can afford it. That way you...

    Sleepy or physically tired?

I slept a lot before my AVR. I remember yawning on the way to work in the morning, drinking coffee morning, noon, and night, and going straight to the couch when I got home from work. I had very little energy. I was very, very sick and didn't know it (asymptomatic). I felt incredible in the...

32 and confused re: valve type selection

I hope you find some peace soon. It was a tough decision for me - very hard to balance emotion and intellect. I chose a homograft because I was 30 at the time, a newlywed, and didn't want to take warfarin. I lost my younger brother during his 4th OHS when I was 18 so I had some first hand...

Sternotomy concern or am I just crazy????

The scar isn't an issue for me. It took some time to get used to the curious looks from folks; but, I got over it pretty quickly. It's such a part of me. I wear whatever I want. Good luck on your decision!

Julian, I hope your surgery is successful and that your hospital stay and recovery are uneventful. See you on the other side of the mountain. Lisa

    Newbie

Welcome, puckparent! Good luck on your search for a surgeon. I opted for the full sternotomy. I figured, give them all the room they need. I wasn't a candidate for the other option anyway :-) You know, it doesn't even bother me that people look at the scar now. It took a little while to...

Why do you Think there is So Much Emotion?

I was never worried about not coming home; however, I was on emotional roller coaster before and after the surgery. It was worse during recovery. I must say I'm worried about the next one. I'm 7 years post-op with a homograft and in the "moderate" range, or at least I was at my check-up last...

    Got the call

Best wishes for a successful surgery (and uneventful). I hope you have some peace going into it. I felt like Duffy when it was my turn. I was excited because I was so ready to do it!

minimally invasive heart surgery with no bone cutting

Welcome, Heartdoc! I don't remember being offered mini for my AVR. I also don't recall if I asked about it. I was pretty familiar with what to expect during/after surgery because I lost my younger brother during his 4th OHS. I probably said something like "just crack me open and do what...

    Post surgery valve leak (regurgitation)?

Ditto what Scott said..I had leakage indicated right after receiving my homograft.

    Good checkup -

I got the reading of my last echo today. Great news, the homograft is still going strong. There have been some changes over last year, but overall pretty good. My AI was considered mild in Oct. 2009 and is considered mild to moderate as of Oct. 2010. I'll take that! :tongue2:

Anyone ever get Vertogo or double vision

I get diplopia from time to time, also. It only lasts for a few minutes and happens at the most inconvenient times, like driving :-)! I close one eye and tilt my head a little (usually to the left) and then I can see until the diplopia goes away. It nearly scared me to death the first time it...
